More about this title

About the Composer: Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson brings decades of choral leadership to his work as School Choral Editor for Sing!, the educational division of Choristers Guild. Based in Dallas, Texas, he has built an extensive catalog of over 500 choral works, vocal solos, and keyboard pieces now in widespread use across American schools and churches.

Johnson's experience directing at the secondary and youth levels shapes his compositional voice. From 2000 to 2018, he led multiple choirs at Ft. Worth Academy of Fine Arts, including the Academy Singers and the Singing Girls of Texas. Since 2022, he has served as conductor of the Dallas Symphony Children's Chorus Mixed Ensemble, working with advanced high school singers. His involvement with the American Choral Directors Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, and ASCAP reflects his standing within the profession.

Why we love this

Johnson writes with the ear of someone who has spent years in rehearsal rooms with developing singers. This octavo balances accessibility with genuine musical substance, offering SATB choirs an energetic concert piece that builds confidence without sacrificing musicality. The PianoTrax accompaniment gives ensembles the freedom to rehearse independently while maintaining rhythmic precision and musical context.

What to expect

Jubilate, Exsultate! radiates joy and forward motion from its opening measures. The text and music create a celebratory atmosphere that invites singers to lift their voices with genuine enthusiasm, balanced by moments of musical refinement that keep the energy purposeful rather than frantic.

Who it's for

High school SATB choirs performing at concerts, festivals, and competitions will find this piece engaging and within reach. The writing sits comfortably for singers with developing technique while offering enough musical interest to sustain audience attention.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the text clarity in the opening phrases by encouraging singers to shape vowels through dynamic changes rather than adding consonant weight.
  • Reference the PianoTrax recording during sectional rehearsals to lock in ensemble entries and intonation in the full voice sections.
  • Mark breath points collectively in rehearsal before the performance to maintain phrase momentum, especially through longer choral statements.
  • Adjust the recorded tempo if your ensemble needs more time for clarity in faster passages; the digital format allows flexibility for your rehearsal pace.

How to use it

Place this piece in the first half of a concert program to energize your audience, or use it as a closing number to send listeners out with brightness. It pairs well with more introspective choral literature, providing variety in mood and musical character while showcasing your ensemble's versatility.

Skills your students will build

  • SATB blend and balance in full choir sections
  • Sustained phrasing across longer melodic lines
  • Rhythmic precision when singing with recorded accompaniment
  • Text projection in a joyful, energetic context
  • Independent part-singing in divisi passages
