More about this title

About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has shaped band music education through more than 800 published compositions and arrangements. His Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music, has been translated into French and Norwegian and remains a cornerstone text in schools worldwide. Ployhar's training in orchestration came through direct study with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and his compositions have been performed internationally across Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim.

Beyond composition, Ployhar has built a career as a clinician and educator, spending over 19 years in public school teaching and conducting workshops at colleges and universities throughout North America and Europe. His contributions to band music earned him the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Valley City State University. He holds degrees from Valley City State University, Northern Colorado University, and completed graduate study in composition at California State University-Long Beach.

Why we love this

Ployhar's warm-up sequence moves baritone players through every technical foundation they need in one focused resource. Rather than cobbling together exercises from multiple sources, your section gets a coherent progression designed by someone who understands brass pedagogy and has tested these materials in actual band rooms. The inclusion of tuning suggestions and instrument-specific warm-up guidance from additional experts means every baritone player has direct support for their individual needs.

What to expect

Working through these exercises builds quiet confidence. Each unit compounds on the previous one, turning scattered technique work into a logical journey from basic slurs and scales into the rhythmic precision and dynamic control that make baritones essential to band sound.

Who it's for

Baritone players at any level benefit from having a organized technical foundation. This book serves students developing fundamental skills, intermediate players refining technique, and experienced musicians maintaining embouchure strength and facility during the season.

How to get the most out of it

  • Begin each rehearsal with the lip slur exercises to establish consistent embouchure control before moving to scale work.
  • Use the chromatic scale studies to reinforce valve coordination and finger flexibility in patterns that reveal any coordination gaps.
  • Return to the interval studies when intonation drifts; these exercises isolate the ear's ability to hear and adjust pitch relationships.
  • Apply the articulation and dynamic studies directly to the opening statements and exposed passages in your concert repertoire.

How to use it

Open every rehearsal with a 5- to 8-minute segment from one of these units, rotating through them across the week so your section covers all technical areas monthly. Reserve the rhythm studies and rudiment review for weeks when your concert music requires particular rhythmic or articulation challenges.

Skills your students will build

  • Lip slur consistency and embouchure control
  • Major, minor, and chromatic scale fluency
  • Arpeggio patterns across valve combinations
  • Interval intonation and pitch adjustment
  • Articulation clarity across dynamic ranges
  • Rhythmic precision in varied meters
  • Valve coordination and finger flexibility
