About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has shaped music education through prolific output and hands-on mentorship, with over 800 published compositions and arrangements to his name. His Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music, became a foundational text translated into French and Norwegian and adopted widely in Norwegian schools. Ployhar studied composition at California State University-Long Beach under Morris Hutchings Ruger and drew practical orchestration knowledge from work with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Beyond the page, Ployhar logged more than 19 years in public school classrooms while simultaneously building a reputation as a clinician and conductor. His speaking engagements and workshops at the college and university level earned consistent recognition across the United States, Canada, Norway, Germany, and England. He received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Valley City State University, and served as a member of the American Bandmasters Association.

Why we love this

Ployhar designed this book with the pragmatism of a classroom teacher who knows exactly what percussion players need to build independence and control. The inclusion of instrument-specific tuning guidance and warm-up contributions from percussion specialists ensures every exercise targets real pedagogical goals rather than generic technique. A 32-page comprehensive sequence allows you to weave systematic warm-ups into rehearsal without reinventing your approach each week.

What to expect

This book reads like a master class distilled into daily practice. Each unit builds methodically from foundational concepts to more nuanced control, creating a sense of tangible progress rather than aimless drilling. The variety of topics keeps rehearsals fresh while maintaining the discipline that percussion mastery requires.

Who it's for

Percussion sections in concert bands at the middle school through early high school level benefit most from this systematic warm-up book. Directors seeking a structured, authoritative guide to building percussion technique without piecing together materials from multiple sources will find a complete solution here. Individual percussionists can also work through units independently to strengthen weaker areas or prepare for auditions.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start each rehearsal with one focused unit rather than rushing through multiple sections; let students internalize the rhythmic and technical patterns before moving forward.
  • Encourage players to mark dynamic and articulation studies in their music, treating these exercises as performance preparation rather than mindless repetition.
  • Use the rhythm studies to diagnose ensemble precision problems; if a section struggles with subdivision, these pages give you isolated material to isolate and fix.
  • Rotate through the rudiment review section weekly so players maintain facility with fundamental patterns alongside their concert repertoire.

How to use it

Integrate one unit per week into your band's regular warm-up routine, cycling through the full sequence across a semester or year. This approach establishes consistent technique expectations and gives percussionists ownership of their own development. You can also assign specific sections to players who need targeted work on articulation, dynamics, or rhythm independence outside of full rehearsals.

Skills your students will build

  • Major, minor, and chromatic scale facility across the percussion ensemble
  • Controlled articulation and dynamic contrast in isolation and under tempo
  • Rhythmic precision including syncopation and subdivision accuracy
  • Fundamental drum rudiments and roll control
  • Interval recognition and arpeggiated patterns for melodic awareness
  • Individual instrument tuning techniques specific to timpani and mallets
