About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has established himself as a prolific voice in music education, with more than 800 published compositions to his name. He developed the Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music, which has been adopted in schools across Norway and translated into French and Norwegian. His training in orchestration came through direct study with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, grounding his pedagogical work in professional orchestral practice.

Beyond composition, Ployhar spent over 19 years teaching in public schools and has conducted clinics and workshops at colleges and universities throughout the United States, Canada, Norway, Germany, and England. His contributions to band music earned him the National Band Association Citation of Excellence, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Valley City State University, and membership in the American Bandmasters Association. He holds degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University, with graduate study in composition at California State University-Long Beach.

Why we love this

Ployhar's decades of classroom experience shine through in every unit of this book. Rather than treating warm-ups as rote repetition, he structures each section as a focused technique laboratory that addresses specific challenges clarinetists face daily. The inclusion of individual tuning suggestions and contributed warm-ups from additional woodwind specialists transforms this from a generic method into a resource that acknowledges how differently each player's instrument responds.

What to expect

Working through these exercises feels like building a house from a solid foundation upward. Lip slurs and chorales ground the player's tone and embouchure, scales and arpeggios establish muscle memory and interval awareness, and articulation and rhythm studies layer complexity without confusion. By the final pages, a student has touched every technical cornerstone clarinet playing requires.

Who it's for

This book serves clarinetists in concert band programs who need systematic, efficient warm-up material that covers the full technical spectrum. It works equally well for individual studio practice and ensemble sectional rehearsals, providing structure to what might otherwise be unfocused noodling.

How to get the most out of it

  • Begin each rehearsal with the lip slur exercises to establish embouchure flexibility before moving to tongued passages; this foundation prevents fatigue during articulation studies later in the session.
  • Use the chorale section to reinforce intonation awareness, especially the individual tuning suggestions provided for your clarinet's register breaks and problem notes.
  • Work through scale studies in varied articulation patterns beyond what's written; once students master the basic major scale, layer in slurred pairs or alternating articulation to build independence.
  • Return to the rhythm studies whenever your band struggles with ensemble precision; isolating rhythm from pitch addresses synchronization problems at their root.

How to use it

Reserve this book for the first ten minutes of every rehearsal, rotating through units on a weekly schedule so the band completes the cycle multiple times per year. You might also assign specific sections to struggling players as targeted homework, using the chorale and scale studies as diagnostic tools to pinpoint intonation or technical gaps before they damage ensemble sound.

Skills your students will build

  • Embouchure control and flexibility through lip slurs across the full range
  • Intonation awareness using guided tuning suggestions and chorale exercises
  • Major and minor scale facility with precise fingerwork and tonal consistency
  • Chromatic and arpeggio fluency for harmonic navigation and modulation
  • Clean articulation and dynamic control across different tongue positions
  • Rhythmic precision and subdivision accuracy for ensemble coordination
