About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has shaped music education through prolific composition and pedagogical innovation, with more than 800 published works to his name. His Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music, became a foundational resource translated into French and Norwegian and adopted widely across Scandinavian music programs. Beyond composition, Ployhar spent over nineteen years teaching in public schools and has conducted clinics and workshops at universities across the United States, Canada, Norway, Germany, and England.

His training in orchestration included study under Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and his academic credentials span degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University, plus graduate composition work at California State University-Long Beach. Ployhar's contributions to bands and music education earned him the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater. He has also held membership in the American Bandmasters Association.

Why we love this

Ployhar distills decades of teaching and performance experience into a focused warm-up resource that covers every fundamental technique a baritone saxophonist needs. The progression from lip slurs through advanced articulation and rhythm studies reflects real rehearsal priorities, and the inclusion of tuning suggestions and exercises from additional instrument specialists ensures relevance across your section. Directors appreciate that this book doesn't waste pages on theory or history—every exercise serves an immediate pedagogical purpose.

What to expect

Structured and purposeful without feeling robotic. The progression from physical warm-up through musical studies respects the instrument's demands while keeping players engaged. Each unit feels complete on its own yet contributes to a larger technical architecture.

Who it's for

Baritone saxophonists in grades 4 and up who are ready to systematize their technical foundation. This book works equally well for emerging players building core skills and for more advanced musicians refining articulation clarity and dynamic control. Directors seeking a consistent daily warm-up resource that requires minimal preparation will find this immediately useful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start each rehearsal with the lip slur studies before moving to the chorale section; this sequence establishes a clean embouchure and transitions naturally into intonation work.
  • Work through the scale studies in a consistent order across multiple weeks, rotating between major and minor scales to build muscle memory for key changes without boredom.
  • Apply the articulation and dynamic studies to passages from your current repertoire; these exercises become far more meaningful when students hear how they solve real playing problems.
  • Use the interval studies before sight-reading new concert music, especially if the piece contains wide intervallic leaps or tricky intonation areas.

How to use it

Build this into your standard five-to-ten-minute opening sequence at every rehearsal, cycling through different units so saxophonists encounter fresh material weekly while reinforcing fundamentals. The rhythm and rudiment sections work especially well during sectional rehearsals when baritone saxophonists can focus on precision without competing for attention. Reserve the chorale section for moments when you need to reset intonation or articulation across the full concert ensemble.

Skills your students will build

  • Lip slur technique and embouchure flexibility
  • Major and minor scale fluency across the full range
  • Chromatic and arpeggio facility for advanced repertoire
  • Clear articulation and dynamic control in multiple contexts
  • Rhythmic accuracy in varied meter and subdivision contexts
  • Concert pitch intonation awareness and adjustment
  • Musicianship through chorale study and phrasing awareness
