About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, and initially pursued English and French at the University of Nevada before discovering her passion for music education. She went on to earn a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College, where she focused on integrating arts across the curriculum. After three decades teaching general music and choir in the Washoe County schools, she brought that classroom experience to composition, drawing on what actually works with student singers.

In 1985, Donnelly met George Strid while team-teaching sixth grade music, and their principal's request to write a musical for Reading Week sparked a prolific partnership. Over the following years, the two have created more than two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals together, establishing themselves as composers who understand both the vocal capabilities and the practical needs of school choirs.

Why we love this

Donnelly and Strid have spent decades writing directly for student singers, and that expertise shows in how accessible yet genuinely musical this sacred work is. The recorded accompaniment gives you flexibility in rehearsal while the piece itself builds real choral skills without requiring an advanced ensemble.

What to expect

Gloria Tibi carries the warmth of traditional sacred music with a contemporary sensibility. The piece balances reverence with accessibility, allowing singers to experience the dignity of liturgical text without getting lost in complex counterpoint.

Who it's for

Any choir looking for a well-crafted sacred work that sings beautifully without overwhelming rehearsal time. This sits comfortably for high school and adult ensembles seeking fresh material for worship, concert, or festival settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the recorded accompaniment during early rehearsals to establish the harmonic framework, then gradually transition to piano or organ as the choir gains independence.
  • Balance the text setting carefully; Donnelly's phrasing tends to follow natural speech patterns, so encourage singers to shape phrases rather than mechanically observe bar lines.
  • Bring out the character of each voice part independently before blending them together. This music rewards sectional clarity.

How to use it

Consider this for an Advent or Christmas concert where you need something that bridges classical and modern sensibilities, or for a spring sacred music program where it can anchor a diverse set list. It also works beautifully as an opener for any concert needing to establish a thoughtful, musical tone.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing legit sacred text with appropriate phrasing and reverence
  • Blending multiple voice parts while maintaining individual line clarity
