More about this title

About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has been directing choirs and teaching piano at Rosemead High School in California since 2004. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, complemented by her California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray brings both prolific output and deep classroom experience to her work. Beyond the music studio, she is an active traveler, swimmer, reader, and e-bike enthusiast.

Why we love this

Gray's novelty charm and partner-song structure make this a natural choice for holiday concerts that need genuine humor without sacrificing musicality. The recorded accompaniment gives smaller programs immediate polish, while the secular framing opens programming options beyond traditional sacred Christmas repertoire.

What to expect

Playful and spirited, with the kind of tongue-in-cheek energy that lets singers smile while they sing. It has enough musical substance to feel like real choral writing, not just novelty filler.

Who it's for

Choirs looking to program a lighthearted, contemporary holiday number that avoids the well-worn Christmas carol circuit. Directors who want something with recorded accompaniment support for smaller ensembles or minimal instrumentation concerts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic lift of the accompaniment track to keep the novelty text from dragging; let the recorded track set an energetic pace for ensemble clarity.
  • Balance the partnership with your selected partner song carefully in rehearsal so both pieces feel equally prepared and the transition between them reads as intentional rather than patched together.
  • Treat diction as part of the comedic delivery; crisp articulation on 'Figgy Pudding' and related phrases will land the novelty without overshadowing the actual music.

How to use it

Pair this with your chosen partner song for a dedicated holiday section in your concert, or use it as a palate cleanser between more serious choral works. It works equally well in a secular winter celebration context or as the opening moment that signals your audience the evening has room for joy alongside tradition.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in ensemble singing with recorded accompaniment
  • Comic timing and text clarity in performance
  • Blending voice parts while maintaining character and playfulness
