Why we love this

Ployhar built this method with the understanding that percussion students need clear, engaging instruction from the start, and this auxiliary percussion book delivers exactly that. The French edition opens the Contemporary Band Course to international programs and French-speaking band rooms, removing language barriers without compromising pedagogical quality. Beginning percussionists benefit from graded exercises that develop independence and accuracy on multiple instruments within a single, cohesive framework.

What to expect

Clear, encouraging, and straightforward. Ployhar's method unfolds logically, introducing one instrument or concept at a time so students feel confident rather than overwhelmed. The French text reinforces the musicality of the learning process itself, inviting students into a rewarding musical journey from the very first page.

Who it's for

Beginning auxiliary percussion students in French-speaking band programs, or any beginning percussionist who benefits from instruction in their native language. This book works for students entering concert band for the first time and needing systematic grounding in the non-pitched percussion family.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish consistent grip and posture for each percussion instrument before adding rhythmic complexity; students switching between tambourine, wood block, and triangle will progress faster with attention to proper technique on each.
  • Start with the written rhythms at a moderate tempo and isolate any measure that feels awkward, then gradually increase speed only once the pattern feels natural under the hands.
  • Listen carefully to the suspended cymbal and sleigh bells parts in isolation before adding them to full band texture; their sound can easily disappear if students don't commit to deliberate, well-placed strokes.
  • Keep mallets and striking implements organized and consistent; students who know exactly which mallet produces the correct tone for each exercise will develop faster muscle memory.

How to use it

Deploy this book in the first weeks and months of the school year when auxiliary percussion students need focused, instrument-specific training separate from full ensemble rehearsal. Use it alongside the other Contemporary Band Course parts (woodwinds, brass, percussion) to ensure all students develop foundational skills on a parallel timeline.

Skills your students will build

  • Control and articulation on tambourine, wood block, triangle, claves, and maracas
  • Sustained tone and dynamic control on suspended cymbal and sleigh bells
  • Reading rhythmic notation specific to unpitched percussion
  • Hand independence and coordination across multiple instruments
  • Listening and blend with ensemble sound
