About This Collection

Description

Sarah Lenhart, Becky Bush, and Bob Phillips have created a focused method series designed specifically for beginning string orchestras. The Sound Differentiation for Beginning String Orchestra books address one of the central challenges in a mixed-ability classroom: how to keep all students engaged when they're learning at different paces. You'll work with separate books for violin, viola, cello, and bass, each calibrated to the needs of that instrument, plus a teacher's score that ties everything together. This approach lets you teach one piece of music while students play at their own instructional level.

Highlights

Teachers consistently choose the Violin Book by Sarah Lenhart as their starting point, followed closely by the Cello & Bass Book and Viola Book. The Teacher's Score brings coherence to the method by showing how all four parts work as an ensemble, making lesson planning and rehearsal much more efficient.

Author Spotlight

Sarah Lenhart directed beginning strings programs in Greenwich and Naperville before becoming a middle school orchestra director in Michigan. Her background teaching across multiple states and grade levels shapes the Sound Differentiation series, which reflects her experience managing classes where students arrive with vastly different prior knowledge and skill levels.

Becky Bush founded the Hudsonville Public Schools Orchestra Program in Michigan and co-authored this series with Lenhart. She previously worked as the String Acquisition Editor at Alfred Music and taught music education at the college level, bringing both publishing expertise and pedagogical training to the design of these materials.

Bob Phillips is a prolific composer and pedagogue who has authored over 25 classroom method series, including all six levels of Sound Innovations for String Orchestra. His work is grounded in large group pedagogy and an understanding of how string students learn most effectively in ensemble settings.
