More about this title

About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has shaped choral music education at Rosemead High School since 2004, where she serves as Director of Choirs. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and earned her Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, with credentials from California State University, Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray brings both compositional depth and classroom experience to her work. Beyond the rehearsal room, she is an accomplished pianist and performer who remains active in all aspects of music making.

Why we love this

Gray's text setting in this piece demonstrates the craft of a composer who knows how choral voices move. The literary quality of the poetry paired with accessible three-part writing makes this work engaging for singers without requiring extensive rehearsal time, freeing you to focus on interpretation and blend rather than note-learning.

What to expect

White Fields in Winter evokes stillness and quiet beauty. The poetic text paired with Gray's harmonic language creates an introspective mood that invites singers to listen carefully to one another and shape phrases with intention.

Who it's for

This piece suits high school choirs working at early-to-intermediate levels, as well as community and church ensembles seeking three-part repertoire that combines literary substance with musical accessibility. The SAB voicing opens doors for groups with limited tenor coverage or developing sight readers.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the voices so the text remains clear; SAB writing can obscure words if the alto line pulls focus away from the melody.
  • Use the PartTrax recordings to establish secure pitch centers before full rehearsals, especially if your section leaders are still building confidence.
  • Attend to the winter imagery in the text through dynamics and tone color; subtle changes in volume and vowel shape will deepen the seasonal atmosphere.

How to use it

This work fits naturally into winter concerts and holiday programming when you want something beyond traditional seasonal fare. Its literary quality also makes it suitable for festival or contest consideration alongside more substantial contemporary work.

Skills your students will build

  • Three-part harmonic listening and balance
  • Diction clarity in poetic text settings
  • Interpretive phrasing from literary context
  • Ensemble blend across mixed voices
