More about this title

About the Composer: Carol Kelley

Carol Kelley

Carol Kelley grew up in Oregon surrounded by music and earned her BA in music education from George Fox University, where she studied vocal performance, piano, and composition in equal measure. Her work has appeared on the catalogs of Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, and Broadman Press, reflecting her versatility across genres and styles.

For more than 25 years, Kelley has been the accompanist for choir programs and musicals in the Newberg, Oregon area, giving her deep insight into what singers need from the music they perform. She continues to compose, arrange, and perform as a church worship musician, and she remains connected to the music education world through her experience teaching elementary and middle school choirs.

Why we love this

Kelley's SSA writing sits perfectly in that sweet spot where the voicing feels natural and singable without demanding virtuosic ranges, making it accessible to middle school and emerging high school choirs without sacrificing musical substance. The recorded accompaniment lets you hear exactly how the piece breathes, freeing your rehearsal time to focus on blend and artistry rather than learning parts from scratch.

What to expect

The imagery of a waterfall evokes movement and natural beauty; expect flowing lines and textural variety that mirrors the visual sense of water in motion. The piece balances lyricism with rhythmic forward momentum, creating a performance that feels both reflective and energized.

Who it's for

SSA choirs at the middle school and early high school level, or any adult treble ensemble seeking accessible secular repertoire for concerts and festivals. Directors programming mixed ability choirs will appreciate the straightforward voicing that still rewards careful attention to musicality.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the accompaniment level during rehearsals so singers hear themselves clearly while learning; reserve full-volume accompanying for later run-throughs when parts are secure.
  • Pay attention to the text-music relationship; Kelley's compositions often shape phrases around natural speech rhythms, so let the words guide your interpretive choices rather than imposing symmetrical phrasing.
  • Use the digital download to provide individual learning tracks for each voice part if your singers have access to headphones or personal devices outside of rehearsal time.

How to use it

Slot this into a concert program where you want a secular, standalone work that doesn't require full band or orchestral support and pairs well with both classical and contemporary repertoire. Its moderate difficulty and appealing subject matter also make it a strong festival choice for competitions where you're seeking a piece that showcases musicianship without demanding extended rehearsal time.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained phrase lines with consistent breath support
  • Blend and balance between three distinct voice parts
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment without instrumental cues
  • Expressive shaping of text-driven compositions
