About the Composer: Carol Kelley

Carol Kelley

Carol Kelley grew up in Oregon and has maintained a deep engagement with music across multiple disciplines throughout her career. She earned her BA in music education from George Fox University, where she specialized in vocal performance, piano, and composition, and has spent decades working in school music programs at both elementary and middle school levels.

For more than 25 years, Kelley has been the accompanist for choirs and musicals at high schools and middle schools in Newberg, Oregon, while also composing and arranging works for various publishers including Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, and Broadman Press. Beyond the classroom, she is active as a pianist and vocalist in her church worship program and finds inspiration in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Why we love this

Kelley writes with genuine sensitivity to what singers can do and what they need to hear. The recorded accompaniment captures the piece's lyrical intention perfectly, giving your singers a reliable reference while keeping them focused on blend and interpretation rather than fighting against an accompanist's tempo.

What to expect

Imagery of flowing water suggests both motion and reflection. The piece balances gentle undulation with moments of contemplative stillness, inviting singers into close attention to blend while the accompaniment provides forward momentum.

Who it's for

SATB choirs at the high school level or confident middle school programs looking for concert and contest repertoire that sits comfortably in singers' ranges. This piece works well for groups building confidence in four-part writing without extreme tessituras.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the soprano and alto lines carefully in the opening phrases so the accompaniment supports rather than overwhelms the ensemble sound
  • Work the legit vowels first before layering in any stylistic inflection; Kelley's harmonic writing rewards clarity in the sustained passages
  • Use the track to establish a shared understanding of phrase breathing before attempting unaccompanied sections, if any exist

How to use it

Pair this with other secular works to round out a concert set, or feature it in a festival competition where recorded accompaniments are permitted. It also serves as an excellent teaching piece for building healthy vocal habits and four-part balance in a school year's arc.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining long vocal lines while maintaining breath support
  • Listening for blend in SATB voicing
  • Following a recorded accompaniment with rhythmic independence
  • Interpreting text through dynamic shaping in a legit vocal style
