Description
This book provides a handy study, practice and resource guide for all musicians who are seeking to improve their music-making abilities. Though written by a drummer, the text exercises and etudes in this book are not for drummers only! And while a good number of the exercises can be sung or played on any instrument, the reader is encouraged to tap these rhythms out: "playing" your thighs with your hands, for example, will work just fine. The examples can be performed solo or in a small group. Includes: -Training for all musicians -Specific exercises for jazz phrasing, pop/funk and classical music -Solo and duet exercises, playable on any instrument -Rhythm etudes with 1 - 4 parts for solo and ensemble practice -A recording with 19 tracks of listening and reference materials

More about this title

About the Author: Peter Erskine

Peter Erskine

Peter Erskine began studying drums at age 4 and has spent more than five decades working across jazz, classical, pop, and film music. His recording catalog exceeds 700 albums and scores, and his playing has appeared alongside Weather Report, Steely Dan, the Yellowjackets, and artists ranging from Chick Corea to Diana Krall. He has performed as a soloist with major orchestras worldwide, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the London Symphony Orchestra.

Eskine held a faculty position at the University of Southern California for over 20 years and continues to conduct clinics and masterclasses internationally. His contributions to percussion education and performance earned him induction into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 2022, along with two Grammy Awards and multiple nominations. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy and an honorary Doctor of Music from Berklee College of Music.

Why we love this

This book cuts through the myth that rhythm training belongs only in the percussion section. Erskine draws from his decades working across jazz, classical, and contemporary music to build a resource that serves any musician who needs stronger internal timing and pulse awareness. The included 19-track recording transforms solo practice into an interactive experience, making this feel less like a workbook and more like a series of guided coaching sessions.

What to expect

The exercises feel like private coaching from someone who has played with the world's best timekeepers. Rather than abstract theory, Erskine grounds rhythm work in real musical contexts, making the practice tangible and purposeful. The 19 recorded examples create a conversational quality, as though you are working alongside a mentor who understands what it takes to play in time across different styles.

Who it's for

This resource serves any musician looking to strengthen their rhythmic foundation, whether they play wind, string, keyboard, or voice. It works equally well for jazz players refining phrasing, classical musicians developing metronomic precision, and pop or funk players locking into groove. Teachers looking for a shared language around time and pulse will find concrete material they can assign across an entire ensemble.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the exercises in sequence rather than skipping ahead; the progression builds your internal clock deliberately, and each etude reinforces concepts from earlier sections.
  • Use the recorded tracks to lock your sense of time without having to depend on a metronome alone; alternate between playing with the audio and without it to develop independence.
  • Perform the solo and duet exercises in front of a mirror or with a practice partner when possible; watching your physical commitment to the pulse reveals tension and acceleration patterns you might not hear.

How to use it

Integrate this into sectional rehearsals or private lessons as a common reference for timing and pulse awareness across your ensemble. Assign chapters corresponding to the styles your group is performing; a jazz band might focus on the jazz phrasing section while a classical ensemble benefits from the etudes designed around tempo stability. The duet exercises work beautifully as peer assignments, building accountability while developing musicianship one partnership at a time.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognizing and correcting tempo drift and acceleration
  • Internalizing pulse without relying solely on external metronomes
  • Applying time awareness across jazz, classical, and contemporary styles
  • Coordinating rhythmic precision in solo and ensemble contexts
  • Interpreting and executing stylistically appropriate phrasing in different genres
