More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 choral works now in active performance worldwide. His pedagogical resources, including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique, have shaped how thousands of singers learn and develop. A trained tenor with degrees from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, Beck regularly serves as guest conductor, choreographer, and clinician for honor choirs and all-state groups across the country and beyond.

Beyond his work at Alfred, Beck remains an active performer and director in musical theatre and chamber ensembles, including the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir. His dual commitment to composition and education means his pieces are written by someone who understands what works in the rehearsal room and what singers genuinely enjoy performing.

Why we love this

Beck writes novelty pieces that actually hold up musically; they're fun without being disposable. The inclusion of movement and staging cues means you're not scrambling to choreograph or stage this yourself, and the recorded accompaniment lets singers hear exactly what to expect before rehearsal even starts.

What to expect

Lighthearted and energetic, with enough melodic and rhythmic wit to keep singers engaged beyond the novelty hook. The piece has the playful irreverence of modern holiday music without straying into parody.

Who it's for

Choirs of all levels looking for a holiday piece that entertains without sacrificing musical substance. This works equally well for church choirs, school choirs, and community ensembles seeking something contemporary, singable, and seasonally appropriate.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the recorded accompaniment establish the groove in early rehearsals so singers can lock into the character and energy of the piece quickly.
  • Work the staging and movement cues alongside the musical learning rather than treating choreography as an afterthought; this ensemble will buy into the piece faster when body and voice connect.
  • Commit fully to the novelty spirit. Half measures kill this kind of piece; singers will feel whether you genuinely enjoy what you're asking them to perform.

How to use it

Position this as a concert opener or closer to shift the mood and energy of a holiday program. It pairs well alongside more traditional seasonal carols, giving audiences a contemporary anchor and showing the full range of what your choir can do.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in syncopated passages
  • Balancing ensemble blend with clear character voices in novelty writing
  • Coordinating movement and singing simultaneously
  • Stylistic flexibility and performative confidence
