More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck oversees choral publications at Alfred Music, where his compositional voice has shaped the repertoire available to singers across North America. His output includes over 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals, alongside pedagogical resources like Sing at First Sight and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. His work appears regularly on YouTube, performed by ensembles ranging from school choirs to professional groups.

Beyond the page, Beck works as a guest conductor, choreographer, adjudicator, and clinician. He has served as a commissioned composer and conductor for honor choirs and all-state ensembles throughout the Southeast. A trained tenor with degrees from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, he continues to perform with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and has contributed as an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992.

Why we love this

Beck writes novelty pieces that directors actually want to rehearse. The '60s spy-movie aesthetic gives this Santa number genuine charm without veering into schmaltz, and the built-in choreography suggestions mean you're not starting from scratch. The recorded accompaniment CD lets you hear exactly how this groovy anthem sits in the mix.

What to expect

Imagine a 1960s spy thriller soundtrack colliding with Christmas caroling. You get orchestral panache, irreverent energy, and a wink at the audience. The music bounces with retro cool while the lyrics keep the holiday spirit alive.

Who it's for

Middle school, high school, and community choirs looking for a secular holiday selection with humor and spectacle. Directors who want their Christmas program to stand out from the standard reverent fare will find a ready-made crowd-pleaser here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Reference the recorded accompaniment to nail the rhythmic drive and retro vibe; the '60s instrumentation will anchor your ensemble's interpretation
  • Lean into the character work with your singers. The "Whoosh! Pow!" moments demand commitment and personality, not just accurate notes
  • Use the staging suggestions as a starting point, but encourage your singers to own the comedic timing. This piece thrives on theatrical confidence

How to use it

Position this as your program's comedic anchor or finale. It works beautifully as a palate cleanser between more serious carols, or as the grand finale that leaves audiences laughing and humming. The novelty factor makes it ideal for holiday concerts where you want to balance reverence with fun.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining rhythmic precision in a groove-based arrangement
  • Interpreting and performing choreographed movement while singing accurately
  • Blending comedic character work with secure vocal technique
  • Listening to recorded accompaniment and matching ensemble balance
