About the Arranger: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and pursued advanced choral work during her time at North Texas State University, where she developed the accompanying skills that would anchor her arranging career. She has composed and arranged extensively for choirs, piano, handbells, and solo voice, earning multiple ASCAP Plus Awards recognition throughout her publishing career. In 2002 and 2004, she studied under the mentorship of Dove Award winner Mark Hayes, which shaped her approach to choral writing.

By 2009, Courtney had reached 100 published titles, and by 2017 she had surpassed 350. Her work spans church music, concert settings, and festival repertoire. She maintains a full-time writing practice, teaches piano and composition to students across all levels, and currently resides in Columbia, Tennessee.

Why we love this

Courtney's arrangement captures the lyrical strength of a world music selection while keeping the demands manageable for SAB choirs. The three-part voicing opens this piece to broader festival and concert programming, and the PartTrax download format gives singers immediate access to secure their part without waiting for printed scores.

What to expect

The arrangement honors the folk character of the piece while opening it to a broader vocal range. Courtney's choral writing balances accessibility with musical substance, creating a performance that feels both grounded and uplifting.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves choirs in schools, churches, and community ensembles preparing for concert programs and festival competitions. The SAB voicing accommodates mixed ensembles with varying soprano ranges or limited tenor resources.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the accompaniment track multiple times during early rehearsals to internalize the rhythmic and harmonic foundation before sectional work begins.
  • Balance the three parts carefully in measures where all voices move in parallel motion; SAB voicings can obscure the soprano line if lower voices aren't controlled.
  • Mark breathing points together as a full choir during a sightreading run-through so ensemble cohesion remains intact in longer phrases.
  • Explore the recorded accompaniment in performance context; some directors find a modified tempo or slight tempo variance lifts the expressive intent.

How to use it

Include this selection in a concert program focused on peace, unity, or world music traditions. The piece works equally well as a festival submission or as part of a thematic concert pairing it with other folk or secular choral selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing world music repertoire with stylistic awareness
  • Balancing three-part voicing in mixed ensembles
  • Singing independently with recorded accompaniment support
