More about this title

About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, and studied English and French at the University of Nevada, Reno before pursuing her passion for music education. After earning a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she spent three decades teaching general music and choir in the Washoe County School District, with a particular focus on integrating the arts across the curriculum.

In 1985, Donnelly began collaborating with George L. O. Strid when they were asked to write a musical for their school's Reading Week. That first project, The Million Dollar Mystery, launched a prolific creative partnership that has produced over two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals. Both are active members of ACDA, and Donnelly holds memberships in the NEA and ASCAP.

Why we love this

Donnelly and Strid have spent decades understanding what works in real school choirs, and it shows in the directness and sincerity of their writing. This piece sits perfectly in that repertoire space where the music sounds effortless to sing but carries genuine emotional weight, making it rewarding for students to learn and audiences to hear.

What to expect

Serene and reflective, inviting singers and listeners into a contemplative space. The piece emphasizes clarity of text and emotional honesty rather than technical showmanship, allowing the content to shine through.

Who it's for

Any director looking for a piece that works equally well in concert or festival settings and doesn't require elaborate staging or complex vocal demands. The recorded accompaniment makes this accessible for smaller programs or schools without strong instrumental support.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melodic line with the accompaniment so the text remains clear; the SoundTrax recording can help identify where your singers need to project forward.
  • Use the instrumental parts to bolster confidence in sections that feel rhythmically exposed, especially if you're working with younger or less experienced singers.
  • Pay attention to phrase shape rather than treating the piece as a series of disconnected moments; gentle dynamic rises and falls will prevent the performance from sounding static.

How to use it

Pair this with other meditative or spiritually grounded secular pieces to create a thoughtful program segment, or use it as a concert opener to establish a calm, attentive atmosphere. Its accessibility also makes it useful early in the school year while your ensemble is still building musicianship.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with sustained, even tone across phrase lengths
  • Balancing individual voice parts with recorded accompaniment
  • Interpreting text with emotional intentionality rather than technical precision
  • Following dynamic and phrasing cues that shape musical meaning
