More about this title

About the Composer: Lon Beery

Lon Beery

Lon Beery directs six choruses at Spry Middle School in Webster, New York, where he shapes the musical education of roughly 500 students each year. His catalog of over 50 published choral compositions and arrangements spans multiple publishers, including Alfred Music and BriLee, and has earned him several ASCAP Standard Awards. His work I Believe, written for TTBB voices, was performed by the U.S. Army Chorus at President Ronald Reagan's internment service in California.

Beyond composing, Beery contributes actively to the choral education field through articles in the Choral Journal and Music Educators Journal, presentations at ACDA and MENC conferences, and his current role as Middle School Chair for New York ACDA. His dual commitment to classroom teaching and professional leadership reflects a deep investment in choral music at all levels.

Why we love this

This novelty piece brings levity and theatrical flair to your holiday concert without sacrificing musicality. The movement and staging elements transform a simple song into a full production moment that engages audiences and builds ensemble confidence. Beery's gift for writing accessible, enjoyable choral music shines here, giving students a memorable performance experience that keeps them excited about singing.

What to expect

A lighthearted romp through the holiday season with a playful, tongue-in-cheek energy. The piece invites singers and audiences alike into a moment of pure joy and whimsy, complete with opportunities for physical comedy that make it as much performance art as it is choral music.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs seeking an entertaining holiday selection that balances fun with genuine musicality. This piece works equally well for concert choirs with staging ambitions or for groups looking to add personality and variety to their December repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the comedic tone early in rehearsal. This piece thrives when singers commit fully to the novelty character rather than playing it safe or apologetically.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment during rehearsals to lock ensemble entrances and timing, especially if staging movement alongside the singing.
  • Block staging and choreography in advance of full ensemble rehearsals. Separating physical staging from vocal learning prevents students from dividing their focus and accelerates performance readiness.
  • Maintain crisp articulation and rhythmic precision to land the humor effectively. Sloppy execution undermines comedic timing.

How to use it

Position this as a palate-cleanser between heavier seasonal selections, or build your entire second half around novelty and fun pieces that showcase ensemble personality. It pairs especially well in programs that celebrate the theatrical side of choral music, making an ideal choice for middle school winter concerts where student engagement and audience laughter are equally valued.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic coordination of singing with movement and staging
  • Comedic timing and intentional expression
  • Ensemble balance while executing choreography
  • Confidence performing with dramatic or humorous character work
