More about this title

About the Composer: Lon Beery

Lon Beery

Lon Beery directs six SSA, SSAB, and SATB choruses at Spry Middle School in Webster, New York, where he works with roughly 500 students across multiple ensembles. His compositional catalog includes over 50 published pieces distributed through Alfred Music, BriLee, and other publishers, and his work has earned him multiple ASCAP Standard Awards. His TTBB composition "I Believe" was performed by the U.S. Army Chorus at President Ronald Reagan's internment service in California.

Beyond the concert hall, Beery contributes regularly to choral music scholarship and professional dialogue. He has published articles in the Choral Journal and Music Educators Journal, presented sessions at state, regional, and national ACDA and MENC conferences, and currently serves as the Middle School Chair for New York ACDA.

Why we love this

Beery captures the perfect tone for a novelty number that actually works in performance: sassy without being condescending, funny without relying on tired tropes, and structured in a way that lets singers own the comedy. The flexible solo passages mean you can feature one standout vocalist or distribute the fun across your ensemble, and the ragtime influences give the piece genuine musical character beneath the humor.

What to expect

Playful and confident, with a wink in every phrase. The ragtime-influenced accompaniment has swing and sass, while the vocal writing sits comfortably for singers who enjoy character and humor in their singing. This is a piece that invites your ensemble to have fun without sacrificing musicianship.

Who it's for

Directors working with treble choirs who want to program a secular holiday piece with genuine personality and flexible casting options. This works equally well for middle school choirs, community ensembles, and upper-level high school groups looking for a palate cleanser in a winter concert or a standalone holiday performance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat the solo passages as opportunities for character acting, not just singing. Whether you're using one featured vocalist or rotating through several singers, the attitude in the delivery matters as much as the notes.
  • Lean into the ragtime rhythmic feel without letting it become sloppy. Crisp articulation and tight ensemble work actually enhance the comedic timing.
  • If you use the SoundTrax accompaniment, rehearse with it early so your singers lock into the groove and build confidence with the rhythmic pocket before adding staging.
  • Consider how your choreography or movement choices frame the joke. Even simple, purposeful blocking can amplify the personality of the piece.

How to use it

Open a winter concert with this to set a lighter, more theatrical tone for your audience, or use it as a closer to send people out smiling. It pairs well alongside more traditional seasonal repertoire since its novelty approach actually highlights the emotional depth of your other selections. The optional choreography also makes it a natural fit for holiday variety shows or themed concert events.

Skills your students will build

  • Character interpretation and comedic timing in vocal performance
  • Rhythmic precision in ragtime-influenced grooves
  • Flexibility with solo versus ensemble vocal roles and singing style
  • Coordination of singing with movement and staging cues
