About the Composer: Carl Strommen

Carl Strommen

Carl Strommen has built an extraordinary career writing for virtually every musical ensemble and medium. His compositions appear regularly in concert halls, on television and film soundtracks, and in educational settings worldwide. He maintains a reputation as a sought-after clinician and commission composer, earning the ASCAP Standard Writers Award year after year for his prolific output across band, orchestra, jazz, and vocal literature.

Strommen studied at City College of New York and has remained connected to academic music through his role as adjunct professor of orchestration and composition at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York. He and his family divide their time between Long Island and Colorado, where he continues composing and conducting.

Why we love this

Strommen understands what makes a choral moment unforgettable. This octavo builds from a compelling opening into genuine emotional power without requiring a huge voicing or elaborate arrangement. The piece sits comfortably for 2-part ensembles while delivering the dramatic arc that keeps audiences engaged from start to finish.

What to expect

The piece opens with quiet confidence before gathering momentum and soaring into moments of genuine uplift and power. You feel the tension building throughout, like watching someone find their wings and take flight.

Who it's for

This arrangement suits high school choirs and community ensembles with developing voices who need accessible yet substantial literature. The 2-part voicing keeps the reading manageable while the emotional content gives singers something real to perform.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the opening section breathe and land cleanly before the energy begins to rise. Rushing the early phrasing undercuts the impact of the build.
  • Layer the intensity gradually as the piece develops. Each section should feel like a step forward in emotional commitment rather than a sudden jump.
  • Use the SoundTrax accompaniment to lock the ensemble's phrasing and timing, especially through the climactic passages where the choir and accompaniment need to move as one.
  • Mark breath points clearly in rehearsal and hold singers accountable to them. Clean attacks and releases during the powerful sections make the ballad land harder.

How to use it

Program this as a graduation concert centerpiece or spring concert anchor. The themes of growth and aspiration pair naturally with Earth Day programming, and the piece's emotional payoff makes it memorable for audiences and performers alike.

Skills your students will build

  • managing dynamic contrast across a longer form
  • sustaining intensity through phrase-to-phrase transitions
  • responding to accompaniment cues and maintaining ensemble lock
  • expressing emotional arc through vocal tone and commitment
