Why we love this

Johnson captures the authentic energy of gospel idiom without oversimplifying it. The syncopated rhythms and chromatic chord movement demand real musicianship from your singers while the buildup to the "funky vocal stack" gives your choir a moment to shine with contemporary drive that audiences love.

What to expect

Spirited and funky, with the polished energy of a well-crafted gospel composition. The shifting harmonies and syncopated rhythms create forward momentum that pulls listeners in, building toward a satisfying climax driven by layered vocal energy.

Who it's for

Gospel-influenced choirs seeking contemporary repertoire with harmonic depth. This work suits intermediate to advanced SATB ensembles with some facility in syncopation and chromatic harmony.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the groove early in rehearsal by having the rhythm section lock the syncopated patterns before adding voices. These rhythmic cells are the foundation.
  • Bring out the intricate chord changes by balancing upper and lower voices equally; the harmony's authenticity depends on hearing all four parts clearly.
  • Let the piano solo breathe naturally as written. It sets up the final section and gives your singers a chance to reset before they power through to the end.
  • Encourage rhythmic precision and light articulation in the vocal stack section. The energy comes from ensemble tightness, not volume alone.

How to use it

Program this alongside other contemporary sacred works to showcase your choir's versatility and command of modern idiom. Its 12-page length and accessible finale make it ideal for spring or end-of-year concerts where you want to leave audiences energized.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing syncopated rhythms in SATB texture
  • Navigating chromatic chord changes and non-diatonic harmony
  • Balancing four independent vocal lines in close harmony
  • Performing gospel-style articulation and phrasing
  • Maintaining rhythmic precision in ensemble contexts
