About the Composer: Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson brings decades of hands-on choral experience to his prolific output. Based in Dallas, Texas, he has composed and arranged over 500 works for choirs, vocalists, and keyboard, establishing himself as a go-to voice for accessible, singable choral literature. His tenure as choral director at Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts (2000-2018) gave him direct insight into what works in rehearsal and what resonates with singers of varying abilities.

Today, Johnson serves as School Choral Editor for Sing!, the educational publishing division of Choristers Guild, and conducts the Dallas Symphony Children's Chorus Mixed Ensemble. His professional leadership includes membership in the American Choral Directors Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, and ASCAP, making him both a respected publisher and an active voice in choral education.

Why we love this

Johnson writes gospel and sacred music that sits comfortably in the voice while delivering genuine spiritual warmth. The recorded accompaniment means your choir can rehearse independently or perform with confidence, and the style invites both traditional and contemporary interpretations depending on your community's needs.

What to expect

Uplifting and direct, with the warmth that comes from spiritual sincerity. The piece invites singers and listeners into a moment of genuine connection rather than showiness, grounded in the gospel tradition but approachable for choirs new to the style.

Who it's for

Church choirs, school choirs, and community ensembles looking for repertoire with accessible ranges and clear, singable lines. This works equally well for directors seeking a single strong selection or building out a gospel-influenced concert program.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the ensemble sound by having singers mark their entrances lightly before full rehearsal; gospel phrasing often depends on precise ensemble attacks.
  • Use the accompaniment recording at rehearsal tempo first, then gradually bring it to performance speed as confidence builds.
  • Encourage singers to feel the rhythmic pocket of the piece rather than rushing; gospel swing relies on relaxed, intentional timing.
  • Shape the dynamic arc across phrases to prevent the energy from flattening; even sustained passages benefit from subtle internal growth.

How to use it

Pair this with other Johnson arrangements or similar gospel-influenced sacred pieces to create a thematic concert section. It works beautifully as a centerpiece in a concert celebrating African American choral traditions or as a stand-alone offering in a mixed-repertoire program that wants to reach and move a broad audience.

Skills your students will build

  • Gospel phrasing and swing rhythms
  • Ensemble precision in syncopated entrances
  • Dynamic control within lyrical passages
  • Singing with stylistic authenticity in sacred context
