About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was honored with the Distinguished Alumni award. Early in his career, he worked for eight years as a rights and licenses administrator at a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. His compositional output spans over 800 choral works across all skill levels, performed regularly in English-speaking countries worldwide.

As a member of ASCAP, Althouse is a frequent recipient of the ASCAP Special Award for his contributions to standard music composition. Beyond his choral writing, he has co-created children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, edited respected vocal solo collections, and authored widely-used classroom resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. His choral work I Hear America Singing, co-written with Albrecht, was performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009. He resides in North Carolina and serves on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America.

Why we love this

Althouse crafts pieces that balance musical substance with practical staging, giving choirs tangible movement to support their performance energy. The inclusion of a recorded accompaniment means rehearsals stay focused on singing and theatrical clarity rather than piano management, freeing you to develop the ensemble's presence on stage.

What to expect

Direct and affirming, with music that inspires singers to sing with conviction and purpose. The piece builds momentum through its staging elements, transforming a choral moment into a full ensemble statement.

Who it's for

Intermediate to advanced choirs seeking a secular work with both musical and theatrical dimension. Directors who want to program a piece that energizes singers and audiences through meaningful movement will find this accessible and rewarding.

How to get the most out of it

  • Coordinate the movement and staging early in rehearsal so singers internalize the gestures alongside the music. This connection makes the piece feel unified rather than music-plus-blocking.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment during performance to lock the ensemble's confidence. Singers who trust the track will sing out with the freedom the piece deserves.
  • Establish clear sight lines between your conductor and your singers during movement sections. Even with accompaniment, a confident visual connection anchors the ensemble through staging.

How to use it

Position this as a centerpiece for a concert where theatrical presentation matters equally to vocal quality. Its built-in staging makes it ideal for spring concerts, assembly performances, or any program where you want the choir to occupy the full stage with intention.

Skills your students will build

  • Coordinating movement with sustained vocal line
  • Performing with recorded accompaniment
  • Projecting confidence through ensemble staging
  • Balancing theatrical presence with musical focus
