About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse earned both a B.S. in Music Education and an M.Ed. in Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later honored with the Distinguished Alumni award. Early in his career, he worked as a rights and licenses administrator for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. His compositional output spans more than 800 choral works performed regularly across the English-speaking world, and he holds membership in ASCAP with multiple Special Awards recognizing his contributions to standard choral repertoire.

Beyond composing, Althouse has collaborated extensively with his wife Sally K. Albrecht on children's musicals and vocal collections, including the widely adopted Folk Songs for Solo Singers. His pedagogical resources like The Complete Choral Warm-up Book, Accent on Composers, and Ready to Read Music have become fixtures in music classrooms. He served on the board of the North Carolina Master Chorale and currently sits on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America.
