More about this title

About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, and earned degrees in English and French from the University of Nevada, Reno before discovering her calling in music education. She pursued formal training in music pedagogy at Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she focused on integrating arts across the curriculum. For three decades, she taught general music and choir in the Washoe County School District, leaving a mark on thousands of elementary and middle school students.

In 1985, Donnelly began a prolific creative partnership with arranger George L. O. Strid when their principal challenged them to write a musical for Reading Week. That collaboration, The Million Dollar Mystery, launched a career that has produced over two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals. A member of ACDA, NEA, and ASCAP, Donnelly brings classroom experience and genuine understanding of what young singers need into every piece she writes.

Why we love this

Donnelly's gift for writing singable, emotionally resonant melodies comes through powerfully here. The arrangement by George L. O. Strid captures the earnestness of the text without overshadowing young voices, making this ballad equally effective in a concert setting or as a standalone piece that means something to performers.

What to expect

Hopeful and resolute, this ballad carries an undercurrent of quiet strength. The melody suggests determination that builds gradually, matching text about following dreams with music that inspires rather than manipulates.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs seeking uplifting repertoire with genuine motivational power. Singers appreciate how the music captures conviction without resorting to bombast, and audiences respond to the universal message about perseverance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the phrase arcs carefully so the determination builds naturally toward the emotional core rather than peaking too early
  • Balance the parts so the melody feels supported without drowning in harmony; let the text about dreams carry the weight
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock tempo and provide harmonic security, freeing singers to focus on emotional connection

How to use it

This works beautifully as a closing piece on a concert focused on inspiration, growth, or diversity. It also pairs well on mixed programs as a moment of sincerity and lift between lighter selections.

Skills your students will build
