Why we love this

Gray writes music that honors the text without overshadowing it. Her setting of Shakespeare's 97th sonnet unfolds with the restraint and sophistication that mature singers deserve, making this an ideal choice for choirs seeking literary depth alongside musical substance.

What to expect

Sorrowful yet eloquent, this setting mirrors the winter imagery and longing in Shakespeare's text. The music unfolds with restraint, allowing the lyrical phrases to breathe while maintaining emotional depth throughout.

Who it's for

This octavo suits choirs with solid four-part blend and the musical maturity to sustain long lines. It works equally well for high school honors ensembles, college choirs, and community groups programming contest or festival repertoire with literary merit.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the liquid phrases with genuine legit, avoiding any sense of haste even as you observe the tempo markings. The beauty lies in the singing itself.
  • Note the dynamic and tempo variations marked throughout; they are essential to the emotional arc and should be rehearsed deliberately so singers understand the composer's expressive intent.
  • Balance the SATB lines so that no voice dominates. Gray's writing distributes thematic material across voices, requiring attentive ensemble listening.

How to use it

Position this as a centerpiece for a winter concert or festival competition set that values text-driven, contemporary choral writing. Pair it with lighter or more energetic pieces to give your program contrast, allowing audiences to settle into this work's contemplative mood.
