About the Composer: Janet Gardner

Janet Gardner

Janet Gardner completed her music education degree at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and spent 33 years teaching elementary general music in Montevideo. She became a sought-after clinician and workshop leader, presenting at state universities and music conventions across the United States and Canada. Her contributions to music education earned her recognition as Minnesota Music Classroom Teacher of the Year in 1995.

Gardner's prolific output includes numerous musicals for Alfred Publishing alongside her choral compositions. She chaired the Minnesota Elementary Composition Contest for six years and has received regular ASCAP awards for her works. Since retiring from classroom teaching in 2006, she continues composing from her home in Montevideo, where she remains active as a church musician and arts advocate.

Why we love this

Gardner's novelty pieces have earned their place in choral programs because they balance humor with genuine musical substance. This piece gives singers permission to have fun while still engaging with real compositional craftsmanship, making it an ideal palate cleanser on a concert or a rapport builder early in the year when you're establishing ensemble culture.

What to expect

A playful narrative unfolds with wit and whimsy, supported by melodic writing that's singable and memorable. The harmonic language is accessible but never condescending, allowing choirs to sound polished while embracing the lighthearted storytelling at the piece's heart.

Who it's for

This piece works beautifully for middle school through adult community choirs seeking repertoire that builds morale without sacrificing musicality. Singers respond enthusiastically to novelty material when the writing is skillful, and Gardner delivers both engagement and legitimate harmonic and rhythmic content.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the character and storytelling. The humor lands only when singers commit fully to the narrative arc rather than winking at the audience.
  • Balance diction clarity with musical line. Every syllable of the text matters, but oversinging it will flatten the comedy.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock the ensemble's rhythmic confidence, especially in any syncopated passages where the joke relies on precision.

How to use it

Program this as a strategic opener or closer on a concert where you want to establish warmth and humor with your audience. It also serves excellently as a brain break during rehearsal or as a confidence builder when introducing new singers to a repertoire-based curriculum.

Skills your students will build

  • Clear articulation of rapid text
  • Responding to narrative and character-driven interpretation
  • Ensemble rhythmic cohesion with recorded accompaniment
  • Balancing comedic delivery with musical musicianship
