About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens

William Owens brings three decades of classroom experience to his compositional voice. A VanderCook College of Music graduate and former Texas band director, he has written over 300 works since 1993 for concert band, string orchestra, and chamber ensembles. His music appears on contest lists and in educational texts across the country, reflecting a compositional philosophy grounded in what actually works with young musicians.

Owens holds membership in ASCAP, TMEA, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, and has received commissions from South Plains College, the American Bandmasters Association, and other respected institutions. Since formally stepping away from full-time teaching in 2014, he continues to shape the young band repertoire from his home in Fort Worth, Texas.

Why we love this

Owens writes concert openers with genuine star power. Flourishes! delivers that essential first-impression moment without demanding so much energy that your ensemble is spent before intermission. The flexible instrumentation means you can perform it regardless of what walked through your door on audition day.

What to expect

From the first downbeat, Flourishes! announces itself with unmistakable confidence. The bold opening quickly yields to rich harmonic textures and propulsive rhythmic motion, creating a sense of forward momentum and musical purpose that energizes without exhausting.

Who it's for

Concert bands and flex ensembles at the Grade 2.5-3 level looking for an immediate, confident statement piece. Directors who need something that makes a strong impression without overloading students on a concert's opening slot will find exactly what they need here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the opening boldness with the harmonic lushness that follows. The contrast matters more than volume alone.
  • Give your rhythm section clear ownership of those driving rhythms. A solid foundation makes everything else sing.
  • Experiment with how you color the tonal variety Owens provides. Different sections stepping into the spotlight should feel intentional, not accidental.

How to use it

Perfect as your concert's opening number. The piece announces the caliber of what's to come while preserving ensemble stamina for the rest of your repertoire. It also works well as a festival or contest selection where you want judges to hear your group at full ensemble capability from the top.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing sustained harmonic textures with rhythmic clarity
  • Executing sudden dynamic shifts and tonal color changes
  • Reading flexible instrumentation parts accurately
  • Maintaining ensemble cohesion through varied compositional textures
