About the Composer: Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett has spent his career bridging composition and pedagogy at the University of Oklahoma, where he joined the music theory and composition faculty in 2001. Before that, he served fifteen years as Assistant Director of Bands, work that shaped his deep understanding of what young ensembles can achieve. He continues to arrange for the Pride of Oklahoma marching band while maintaining an active composition practice.

With more than two hundred published works for symphonic band, chamber groups, and marching ensembles, Barrett has established himself as one of the field's most prolific voices. His music has been programmed by All-State and All-Region honor bands across the country, heard on NPR, and featured at major conferences including the Midwest Band & Orchestra Convention and the International Trumpet Guild. A multiple ASCAPlus award recipient, Barrett understands how to write music that challenges musicians meaningfully without overwhelming them.

Why we love this

A Grade 2 opener that doesn't sound like a Grade 2 opener. Fireburst Fanfare gives your brass section something genuinely exciting to play right out of the gate, complete with the kind of scoring clarity that lets young players hear themselves succeed. The woodwind writing lifts it beyond standard fanfare territory, creating enough textural variety to hold an audience's attention while your students build confidence for the rest of the program.

What to expect

Bright, bold, and immediately engaging. The piece opens with brass energy that feels both youthful and theatrical, then pivots to woodwind flourishes that add elegance and color. By the end, it leaves the audience leaning forward and your ensemble energized, not depleted.

Who it's for

Young concert bands ready to make a strong first impression without complex technical or ensemble demands. This score works equally well for middle school groups building confidence, high school bands looking for a tight opener, or festival programs where you need something that commands attention in under five minutes.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring the brass attacks into sharp focus during rehearsal; slightly crisp articulation in the fanfare sections will enhance that immediate impact the piece is designed to deliver.
  • Balance the woodwind flourishes so they register clearly against the brass without pulling focus. These moments are where the piece gets its sparkle, and they deserve to shine.
  • Lock in the tempo before performance. A steady, confident pace will let the energy propel itself rather than relying on pushing from the conductor.
  • Mark your cutoffs precisely during the run-through; clean releases matter more in a piece this short and punchy.

How to use it

Program this first on your concert, before anything that requires sustained intensity or emotional weight. The piece is specifically designed as a gateway that settles your audience and readies your musicians, making it ideal for building momentum into a longer work or a challenging suite. It also travels well to festivals where you need to leave an impression quickly.

Skills your students will build

  • Brass articulation clarity and ensemble unity in fanfare writing
  • Woodwind independence and balanced ensemble blending
  • Precise ensemble cutoffs and synchronized releases
  • Building and controlling dynamic energy in short forms
