About the Composer: Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett has shaped generations of young musicians through his dual career as both educator and prolific composer. Since 2001, he has taught theory and composition at the University of Oklahoma while continuing to arrange for the Pride of Oklahoma marching band, bringing practical ensemble experience into his academic work.

With over two hundred published works for symphonic band, chamber groups, and marching ensembles, Barrett's compositions have earned recognition across the profession. His pieces appear regularly on All-State and All-Region programs, and his work has been featured on NPR and at major conventions including the Midwest Band & Orchestra Convention. He is a multiple ASCAPlus award recipient, reflecting his sustained contribution to the field.

Why we love this

Barrett writes for young bands with genuine musical ambition. The brass writing here is bold and idiomatic without requiring advanced technique, and the woodwind flourishes give your section leaders real moments to shine. It's the kind of opener that gets your audience leaning forward before your featured soloist even walks on stage.

What to expect

Pure forward momentum. The brass cuts through with confident, regal figures while woodwinds dance around them with dazzle and wit. It's brief, it's bright, and it sets an immediate tone of polish and control.

Who it's for

Grade 2 concert bands looking for a genuine opener that reads easier than it sounds. Young ensembles with solid fundamentals will execute this effectively and feel the professional impact of a well-crafted fanfare.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the brass fanfares so they project without drowning the woodwind counter-melody; the color in this piece comes from both layers working together.
  • Bring out rhythmic precision in the opening gesture to establish the energy immediately; any looseness here costs you momentum.
  • Shape the woodwind flourishes with clear articulation and dynamic control so they register as sparkle rather than scramble.

How to use it

Place this at the top of your concert to establish energy and command attention in the first thirty seconds. It works as a standalone opener or pairs naturally with a lyrical second selection to show range. Festival and contest programs benefit especially from its efficiency and impact.

Skills your students will build

  • Projecting articulate brass fanfare figures with precision and confidence
  • Executing rapid scalar woodwind passages with consistent rhythmic placement
  • Balancing simultaneous melodic lines (brass vs. woodwind) for textural clarity
  • Sustaining dynamic intensity in short, focused musical gestures
