About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Butler University. He spent three decades as a high school music director and administrator before transitioning to full-time composition in the 1980s.

Since 1973, Wagner has published more than 3,500 compositions across every major ensemble type: choir, concert band, orchestra, handbell ensemble, organ, piano, and vocal soloists. His works have been performed in concert halls throughout North America and internationally via broadcast and live performance. Over seventeen million copies of his music are in circulation worldwide. He now lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner knows exactly what keeps an audience engaged during a holiday concert. The syncopated rhythms and catchy vocal line feel contemporary without requiring advanced technique, and the infectious chorus gives your singers something they'll genuinely enjoy rehearsing. This piece works equally well as a program opener or a crowd-pleasing finale.

What to expect

The energy is infectious and contemporary. Syncopated rhythms create forward momentum while the festive lyrics and memorable chorus invite the audience into the excitement of Christmas Eve anticipation. It's the kind of piece that energizes a room and sticks with listeners long after the concert ends.

Who it's for

This octavo works for middle school, high school, and community choirs seeking a crowd-pleasing holiday number with real musical substance. The SAB voicing keeps it accessible while the arrangement maintains sophistication that respects your singers' capabilities.

How to get the most out of it

  • Nail the rhythmic precision in the syncopated sections by isolating those passages in rehearsal before adding the harmonic texture; the novelty appeal depends on crisp, confident execution.
  • Let the recorded accompaniment carry the groove during early rehearsals so your singers can focus entirely on locking their parts with the rhythm.
  • Find the sweet spot in tempo where the excitement stays high but the text remains clear; rushing will muffle the lyrics that carry the holiday spirit.

How to use it

Program this as a contrast piece alongside your more traditional or reverent holiday selections. Its novelty character and secular lyrics make it ideal for the second half of a holiday concert, where you can shift the mood toward celebration and lighthearted fun.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing syncopated rhythmic patterns accurately
  • Maintaining a steady pulse while others perform contrasting rhythmic figures
  • Blending three-part harmony in contemporary pop and novelty styles
  • Articulating text clearly at a brisk tempo
  • Following a recorded accompaniment while staying independent on their vocal line
