About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner studied music at Butler University, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees before establishing himself as a prolific composer and arranger. He spent thirty years as a high school music educator and administrator, drawing on those decades of classroom experience to shape his compositional voice.

Since 1973, Wagner has published over 3,500 works spanning choral literature (for school and church settings), concert band, orchestra, handbell ensemble, organ, piano, and vocal music. His compositions have reached audiences worldwide through concert halls, broadcasts, and performances across the United States and internationally. He currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner knows exactly what makes a holiday program memorable, and this piece delivers the infectious energy your singers will actually want to rehearse. The syncopated rhythms and catchy melodic hook give every voice part something memorable to sing, not just filler between solos.

What to expect

The piece crackles with anticipation, capturing that youthful urgency of waiting for Christmas morning. Syncopated rhythms propel the listener forward while the earworm chorus lodges itself firmly in memory.

Who it's for

This octavo works beautifully for high school and middle school choirs looking for a contemporary seasonal piece that appeals to younger singers. It also suits community choirs and church music programs seeking energetic holiday repertoire that doesn't rely on standard carols.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the syncopation crisp and locked in the rhythm section; have your sopranos and tenors practice their lines against a steady pulse from the basses and altos to establish the groove.
  • Shape the repeated sections of the chorus with subtle dynamic and articulation changes to prevent them from feeling static even after multiple repetitions.
  • Balance the festive excitement with clarity; the novelty charm comes through only if the audience can hear the text clearly and enjoy the rhythmic details.

How to use it

Program this as an opener or closer to a holiday concert; its infectious energy can set a celebratory tone or send audiences out smiling. It pairs well alongside more traditional carols or reverent seasonal pieces, offering an entertaining contrast that showcases your singers' rhythmic precision and contemporary style.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing syncopated rhythms with precision and ensemble clarity
  • Sustaining energy and focus through repeated melodic sections
  • Balancing text clarity with rhythmic drive in a contemporary style
