About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans both publishing and composition; he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America.

As a composer, Althouse has more than 800 choral works in print across all difficulty levels and maintains active membership in ASCAP, receiving the Special Award multiple times for his contributions to standard music repertoire. Beyond composition, he has compiled vocal collections, co-written children's musicals with Sally K. Albrecht, authored music education resources for classroom use, and serves on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America. He resides in North Carolina and has contributed significantly to choral music both regionally and nationally.

Why we love this

Althouse brings a gift for making sacred texts singable without sacrificing depth or theological substance. His arrangement honors the spiritual foundation of the text while creating clear, efficient vocal lines that work across mixed ability levels; directors appreciate repertoire that doesn't require extensive rehearsal time but still delivers meaningful performance.

What to expect

The piece carries warmth and reverence without becoming overly sentimental. The harmonic language supports the spiritual content while remaining singable, creating a performance that feels both authentic and engaging for singers and listeners alike.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves choirs seeking accessible Christmas sacred music with genuine harmonic interest. It works well for churches, school choirs, and community ensembles that want to program something beyond the most familiar carols while keeping preparation manageable.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the harmonic progressions carefully in sections with fuller voicing; the arrangement's effectiveness depends on clean voice leading rather than volume.
  • Work dynamics gradually through rehearsals. Even at modest performance levels, the piece communicates best when phrase shaping is intentional and varied.
  • If using the recorded accompaniment, allow singers time to hear it without singing along first, then layer voices in sections rather than drilling everyone at once.

How to use it

Pair this with other Althouse arrangements or sacred works to create a focused Christmas service or concert segment that emphasizes musical substance alongside holiday tradition. It works equally well as a concert closer or as part of a longer sacred music program.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and singing clean voice leading in block-chord progressions
  • Shaping phrases with intentional dynamics in sacred contexts
  • Balancing ensemble blend across all voice parts
  • Sustaining tone quality on text with repeated vowels and consonants
