About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht brings three decades of publishing expertise and a gift for kinetic choral writing to her compositions. An ASCAP award recipient since 1987, she has published over 600 choral works and directed school choral programs at multiple universities. Her reputation rests on deep understanding of what student singers can achieve when music invites movement and stagecraft into the rehearsal.

Albrecht's conducting experience spans honor choirs at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center. She holds degrees from Rollins College, the University of Miami (both M.A. in Drama and M.M. in Accompanying), and has served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Omicron Delta Kappa. She received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College in 2021.

Why we love this

Albrecht's signature blend of accessible melody, rhythmic precision, and built-in movement opportunities makes this piece both engaging to rehearse and rewarding to perform. The recorded accompaniment frees your focus to develop the staging and blocking, which are integral to the piece's character rather than optional flourishes. This is the kind of concert work that reminds audiences why live choral performance matters.

What to expect

Bright, energetic, and inviting, with the kind of rhythmic snap that makes singers feel the music in their bodies. The piece carries genuine joy without sentimentality, balancing uplifting melody with the physical engagement that modern audiences increasingly expect from live performance.

Who it's for

This piece serves choirs ranging from middle school through community level who want concert material with personality and movement. Directors seeking repertoire that engages both singers and audiences, and that doesn't require elaborate sets or costume budgets, will find a strong match here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the movement and staging cues as seriously as you would harmonic progressions; they are written into the piece's architecture, not layered on top.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock in tempo and precision during early rehearsals, then gradually reduce dependency as singers internalize their parts.
  • Attend to dynamic clarity between phrase sections; the recorded track will carry, so your singers must balance expression with ensemble unity.
  • Rehearse the choreography in sections first, then integrate it with full singing only after parts are secure. This prevents the dual task from overwhelming singers early on.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener or closer where you want immediate audience connection and visual interest. It also works well in festival or contest settings where movement is welcomed and the recorded accompaniment allows flexibility in venue acoustics. Consider pairing it with a contrasting ballad to showcase range in your program.

Skills your students will build

  • Coordinating rhythmic precision with physical movement
  • Maintaining vocal focus during choreographed sections
  • Following director cues for both musical and staging elements
  • Ensemble awareness across vocal parts while attending to blocking
  • Projecting character and energy through sustained performance
