More about this title

About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and earned degrees in music from Butler University. He spent three decades as a high school music director and administrator before committing fully to composition, a decision that has yielded an extraordinary catalog of over 3,500 published works across choral, band, orchestral, handbell, organ, piano, and vocal genres.

Since 1973, Wagner's music has reached millions of performers and audiences worldwide. More than seventeen million copies of his compositions have been purchased, and his works regularly appear in concert halls, broadcasts, and festival programs across the United States and internationally. He currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner builds genuine festive warmth into this madrigal without relying on clichéd arrangements or oversimplification. The piece captures the essence of holiday cheer while remaining fresh enough that students won't groan when you pull it out of the folder. The included recorded accompaniment means you can rehearse independently without a pianist, which is invaluable during the December scheduling crunch.

What to expect

Bright and spirited, with the intricate interweaving of voices that defines the madrigal genre. The piece invites singers into a celebration that feels earned through its musical construction rather than imposed through arrangement choices.

Who it's for

Choirs at the middle school, high school, or community level looking for a Christmas piece that feels genuine rather than generic. Directors seeking repertoire that bridges the gap between traditional madrigal technique and contemporary holiday programming will find this particularly useful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the overlapping melodic lines carefully during the ensemble sections; madrigals thrive on clarity, not blend. Each voice part should sing with distinct character.
  • Lean into the secular, multicultural roots of the madrigal tradition. Encourage singers to articulate with energy and maintain crisp consonants throughout.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment during early rehearsals to establish accurate pitches and entrances, then transition to a cappella singing when the voices are secure.

How to use it

Pair this with a more serious sacred work to create a balanced holiday concert that shows your choir's range and technical depth. It also serves as an excellent teaching piece earlier in the season to strengthen voice part independence before tackling larger ensemble arrangements.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and sustaining independent melodic lines in madrigal texture
  • Precise articulation and diction in secular choral music
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment cues and entrances
  • Understanding harmonic movement through overlapping voice parts
