More about this title

About the Composer: Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin holds degrees in music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he specialized in composition. His catalog includes over two hundred anthems and seven choral musicals, drawing from a remarkably diverse musical background that spans rock, classical, bluegrass, and everything in between. He has worked as a church musician, theme park entertainer, and now serves as Minister of Music at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Choplin travels nationally as a composer, clinician, conductor, and entertainer, known for blending humor with genuine spiritual depth. His recordings, including the self-produced Pepper Is My Real Name and the inspirational solo album Hold On, showcase his gift for connecting with audiences through laughter and emotional resonance. Many of his compositions emerge directly from worship needs at his own congregation, reflecting his conviction that music should inspire people to worship with authentic drama and joy.

Why we love this

Choplin has a rare gift for writing novelty pieces that don't wink at the audience or feel condescending. A Piece of Pi lands perfectly on the boundary between genuinely clever and genuinely singable, making it ideal for concert programs that need a moment of levity without sacrificing musicality. The recorded accompaniment means even smaller choirs can deliver a polished performance.

What to expect

Clever without being precious. A Piece of Pi delivers genuine wit and mathematical whimsy set to music that actually sings well, creating an experience that makes audiences smile and think at the same time. The novelty concept is the vehicle, not the destination.

Who it's for

Any choir looking for a show-stopping novelty number with real musical substance. It works especially well for groups that want to demonstrate range and personality in concert settings, and it's tailor-made for Pi Day celebrations or any program where you need to surprise the audience with something unexpected.

How to get the most out of it

  • Commit fully to the concept and the humor; halfhearted delivery will kill the effect. Your singers need to trust that the piece is worth their energy.
  • Balance clarity in the text setting with musical phrasing so the mathematical jokes don't become pure novelty at the expense of good singing.
  • Use the accompaniment track as an opportunity to lock in ensemble precision, since the accompaniment will expose any rhythmic sloppiness.

How to use it

Slot this as a palate cleanser in the middle of your concert, especially between more serious works. The recorded accompaniment and concert designation make it ideal for spring pops programs or educational concerts where you want to showcase your ensemble's versatility and wit.

Skills your students will build

  • Articulation control for comedic text clarity
  • Ensemble precision with recorded accompaniment
  • Stylistic contrast and tonal flexibility
  • Confidence performing novelty repertoire with commitment and musicianship
