Throughout her career, she has worked as a clinician and guest conductor with honor choirs across the United States and holds memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, American Choral Directors Association, and ASCAP.

Why we love this

Porterfield's arrangement honors the gentle, rocking quality of this beloved Spanish lullaby while making it accessible for young singers and mixed-age choirs. The 2-Part/SSA voicing balances simplicity with musical integrity, allowing developing voices to sing confidently without compromising the warmth and cultural authenticity of the original.

What to expect

A lullaby steeped in warmth and tenderness, this arrangement wraps the listener in the comfort of Spanish tradition. The gentle harmonic support and simplified vocal lines create space for singers to connect emotionally with the text, evoking the intimacy of a parent singing a child to sleep.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for middle school choirs, children's choirs, and community or church choirs seeking accessible yet culturally rich winter or Christmas repertoire. Both 2-Part and SSA voicings allow you to perform with your most flexible ensemble, and the relatively short page count makes it feasible to prepare quickly without sacrificing musical quality.

How to get the most out of it

  • Maintain a gentle, steady pulse that suggests the motion of a cradle rather than a march; let the lullaby breathe naturally and avoid pushing the tempo.
  • Encourage singers to shape phrases with their breath rather than articulating syllables crisply; Spanish text naturally carries a smoother, more legato quality.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to reinforce the harmonic foundation and to model the lyrical phrasing for your singers during sectional rehearsals.

How to use it

Include this piece in a winter or holiday concert to add cultural and linguistic diversity to your program; it pairs beautifully with other world music selections or as a gentle counterpoint to more energetic seasonal fare. The accessibility and emotional directness of the piece also makes it an excellent choice for community outreach performances or multicultural education programs.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing Spanish text with appropriate phrasing and pronunciation
  • Singing expressively in a legato, lyrical style
  • Navigating 2-Part and SSA voicing formats with confidence
  • Understanding lullaby conventions and how to convey tenderness through vocal tone
