Description
Originally published in The Social Harp in 1855, this revivalist song has become deeply woven into the American folk music tradition. A powerful and insistent rhythmic foundation is laid by the low voices, as the agile melody darts over top. A slower middle section offers some warm homophonic harmony in a setting that is largely polyphonic. The dance returns and builds to a dazzling and multitextured finish. Exquisite!

Don't just read it, hear it, play along with it, and watch your students grow with it. In MakeMusic Cloud, Zion's Walls: SATB divisi, a cappella Choral Octavo comes alive with professional accompaniment, adjustable tempo, and built-in practice tools that turn solo practice into real progress.

About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later recognized with the Distinguished Alumni award. Early in his career, he spent eight years in music publishing as a rights and licenses administrator and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. His output as a composer is remarkable: over 800 choral works now in print, performed widely across English-speaking countries and regularly honored with ASCAP Special Awards.

Beyond composition, Althouse has shaped music education through multiple channels. He has compiled vocal solo collections, co-written curriculum resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers, and created classroom materials on music literacy and composer study. With his wife Sally K. Albrecht, he co-wrote children's musicals and I Hear America Singing, a choral work performed at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration. Active in folk music scholarship, he serves on the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America and contributes to its publications.

Why we love this

Althouse respects the folk source material while giving it architectural sophistication. The interplay between the propulsive rhythmic anchoring in the lower voices and the fleet melodic movement above creates genuine textural interest without sacrificing the tune's directness. The middle section's contrast in sonority and movement prepares the climactic return beautifully, making this a piece that rewards both singers and listeners with clear musical shape.

What to expect

A revivalist hymn transformed into something that moves and dances. The rhythm propels forward with spiritual fervor while the melody weaves through the voices with agility and joy. The warm, slower middle ground offers genuine tenderness before the energy returns with even greater vitality and complexity, building to a finish that feels both exuberant and carefully crafted.

Who it's for

Mixed choirs of intermediate to advanced ability who want to perform an arrangement that honors American folk tradition while offering real compositional craftsmanship. The divisi writing and polyphonic textures demand secure voice independence and musicianship, making it suitable for festival, concert, or contest settings where choirs can showcase both ensemble precision and stylistic understanding.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythmic pulse with the low voices from the opening; their steady foundation allows the melody to dance freely without rushing ahead of the harmonic support.
  • Shape the homophonic middle section with unified vowel colors across all voice parts, letting the warmth of the block harmony create a genuine moment of repose before the energy returns.
  • Build the final section with layered intensity, bringing in the polyphonic texture gradually so the dazzling finish emerges through accumulation rather than sudden volume.

How to use it

Program this as a concert centerpiece or contest selection where your choir can demonstrate comfort with American folk sources and polyphonic writing. It pairs naturally with other spirituals or shape-note hymns, or it can stand alone as a substantial contrast to art song or classical literature. The 16 pages and layered scoring make it substantial enough to anchor a set without requiring an accompanist.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining rhythmic precision while other voice parts move in contrasting patterns
  • Singing polyphonic texture with secure voice independence
  • Balancing homophonic harmony with clarity and unified tone
  • Reading and interpreting American folk song arrangements
  • Building dynamic tension and release across longer musical phrases
