More about this title

About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and studied music at Butler University, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees. He spent three decades as a high school music director and administrator before committing full time to composition in the early 2000s.

Since 1973, Wagner has published more than 3,500 compositions across virtually every musical medium: choir, band, orchestra, handbells, organ, piano, and voice. His works have circulated globally, with over seventeen million copies in use and performances documented on international broadcasts and concert stages. He currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner captures something rare here: a text about the invisible becomes musically transparent and direct. The three-part voicing never feels thin or compromised; instead, it honors Milne's gentle philosophy while remaining genuinely singable for students at any level of experience. This is the kind of piece that sounds unforced in performance because it asks for sincerity, not technical display.

What to expect

Contemplative and open, like pausing mid-walk to notice something you pass every day. The music matches that moment of stillness, with harmony that feels inevitable rather than fussy. There's air in the arrangement, which lets the words breathe.

Who it's for

Any choir working with developing singers or looking for accessible concert material that doesn't condescend. The SAB voicing makes this natural for middle school or beginning high school choirs, but mature singers will appreciate its understated elegance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat the text as inquiry rather than statement. Milne's questions about the wind should land with natural curiosity, not dramatic weight.
  • Balance the part writing so no voice disappears into accompaniment. With only three lines, every strand contributes to the harmonic color.
  • If using the recorded accompaniment, rehearse without it first to build independent singing before adding that support.

How to use it

Pair this with other nature-themed texts or use it as a grounding moment in a concert that cycles through more dramatic pieces. Its eight pages make it manageable for festival season, and the literary source appeals to English-music collaborations or humanities programs.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing independent melodic lines within simple three-part harmony
  • Breath control and phrase shaping in a text-driven arrangement
  • Expressive delivery of poetic language with musical restraint
  • Blend and balance across three mixed voices
