About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and studied music at Butler University, completing both undergraduate and graduate degrees. He spent three decades teaching and administering music programs in high schools before committing fully to composition in the 1970s.

Since then, Wagner has become one of the most prolific composers in American music education, with over 3,500 published works spanning choral, band, orchestral, handbell, organ, and vocal literature. His music circulates globally; more than seventeen million copies have found their way into rehearsal rooms, churches, and concert halls across the United States and internationally. Wagner now lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner's approach to Milne's text captures genuine philosophical curiosity without becoming precious or overly sentimental. The music sits comfortably in the practical range of mixed voices while maintaining elegance, making it accessible for community choirs, school ensembles, and festival programs without sacrificing musicality.

What to expect

The music reflects the text's sense of observing something invisible but undeniably present. Harmonies are warm and straightforward, yet the writing captures an almost reverent quality, as though the singers are witnessing a natural phenomenon they cannot fully grasp.

Who it's for

This octavo suits mixed choirs across age groups and ability levels, from high school programs to adult community ensembles. The accessible SATB voicing and poetic sensibility make it equally at home in a concert setting or a festival competition.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the text's contemplative wonder guide your tempo choices. The piece invites singers and listeners to linger; resist rushing through phrases even when the writing feels simple.
  • Balance the upper and lower voices carefully. The SATB writing is lean, so clarity matters more than volume; each line contributes to the harmonic conversation.
  • Consider the recorded accompaniment as a rehearsal tool first. It can anchor your ensemble during sectionals, but live piano often brings more flexibility to the interpretive moments Milne's text deserves.

How to use it

Pair this with other nature-themed works for a thoughtful concert program, or use it as a lighter moment in a set of more demanding repertoire. Its eight pages and moderate difficulty make it practical for festivals where rehearsal time is limited.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with lyrical phrasing over simple harmonic progressions
  • Balancing clarity and blend in lean four-part textures
  • Interpreting poetic text with appropriate musical sensitivity
  • Maintaining steady support on longer phrases within a modest range
