Why we love this

Moore grounded this arrangement in the spiritual's original character while layering in contemporary rhythmic energy that keeps singers engaged and audiences invested from start to finish. The balance between accessibility and musicality makes it a genuine crowd pleaser that doesn't sacrifice artistry for popularity.

What to expect

Rooted in tradition but propelled forward by a contemporary pulse, this spiritual radiates infectious joy. The piece builds confidence through singability while delivering the infectious energy that makes spirituals timeless.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves developing choirs ready to tackle repertoire with contemporary rhythmic character and harmonic independence. It works equally well for groups seeking an accessible yet engaging spiritual arrangement that connects with student singers and audiences alike.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythmic groove early in rehearsals by isolating the driving beat; have the choir snap or tap the underlying pulse while singing to internalize the piece's propulsive energy.
  • Shape phrase endings with intentionality rather than letting momentum carry them; the piece's power comes from both drive and strategic release.
  • Feature the SoundTrax CD in early run-throughs to establish the arrangement's style, then gradually pull back accompaniment dependency as singers gain confidence.
  • Balance textural clarity with the full choir sound; avoid letting the rhythmic energy overshadow individual voice line definition.

How to use it

Position this as a guaranteed program brightener in mixed concerts, particularly alongside more classical or introspective pieces where its rhythmic vitality creates welcome contrast. The accessibility makes it ideal for spring pops concerts or community performances where engagement matters as much as artistry.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic independence in syncopated and driving patterns
  • Stylistic interpretation of the spiritual tradition
  • Part singing in spiritual arrangements with contemporary treatment
  • Dynamic control and shape within rhythmically energetic material
