More about this title

About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He has established himself as one of the most prolific voices in American choral music, with over 500 compositions and arrangements published across major houses including Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, Heritage Music Press, and others. His work spans sacred, secular, educational, and pop idioms for voices and keyboard.

As Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Moore brings real-world choral experience to every piece he writes. His compositions appear regularly at state contests and festivals, and the American Choral Directors Association has recognized him as one of 400 composers of lasting significance in American choral history. A seventeen-time recipient of the ASCAP Composers Standard Award, Moore continues to shape the landscape of accessible, meaningful choral literature.

Why we love this

This spiritual arrangement carries the emotional weight of its tradition without demanding virtuosity. Moore's voice leading remains singable across a range of ensemble abilities, and the SoundTrax accompaniment gives your choir a polished reference point whether you're rehearsing independently or preparing for performance.

What to expect

Grounded and contemplative, this spiritual unfolds with the quiet confidence of a piece rooted in deep tradition. The arrangement creates space for sincere expression without artifice, inviting singers and listeners into a moment of genuine reflection.

Who it's for

Any choir seeking a repertoire piece that honors the spiritual tradition while remaining accessible to mixed-ability ensembles. Directors programming sacred concerts or spiritual-themed services will find this arrangement both musically sound and culturally respectful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the spiritual's character in your first rehearsal by listening to the recorded accompaniment together; let singers absorb the harmonic language and phrasing before adding their own voices.
  • Balance the choir's tone to match the reverence of the piece; this spiritual works best when supported by warm, connected singing rather than bright, detached production.
  • Use the instrumental parts if your ensemble includes musicians; they can thicken accompaniment and deepen the performance, especially in smaller venue or studio recordings.

How to use it

Include this as a centerpiece in a service of spirituals, or place it alongside other traditional sacred works to create programming that spans cultural and historical breadth. The recorded accompaniment makes it practical for single-choir services or smaller festivals where instrumental accompaniment may be limited.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing spirituals with authentic phrasing and tone
  • Blending voices within a traditional harmonic framework
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment with rhythmic independence and ensemble awareness
  • Understanding the cultural and historical significance of the spiritual tradition
