More about this title

About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, and initially pursued a double major in English and French at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her path shifted when she organized children's choruses while still an undergraduate; the experience convinced her to pursue music education formally. She earned a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she focused on integrating the arts across the curriculum.

Donnelly spent three decades teaching general music and choir in the Washoe County School District, retiring after building a significant body of choral work. In 1985, she began a collaborative writing partnership with George L. O. Strid when their principal asked them to compose a musical for Reading Week. Since then, they have created over two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals together. She holds memberships in ACDA, NEA, and ASCAP.

Why we love this

Donnelly and Strid understand how to pair meaningful text with melody that young singers can sustain and enjoy performing. Their setting of this literary poem creates a piece that works equally well in concert and contest contexts without sacrificing musicality for accessibility. The two-part voicing keeps blend manageable while the emotional weight of the text gives singers something genuine to convey.

What to expect

The piece carries a reflective, contemplative quality that invites singers to connect with the imagery of the text. There's a lyrical, almost wistful character to the accompaniment that complements the poetic language while remaining emotionally grounded and genuine.

Who it's for

Middle and high school choirs looking for meaningful secular repertoire that pairs strong poetry with accessible vocal writing. This piece serves groups seeking material that works for both concert performance and festival competition without requiring significant divisi or soloistic demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the accompaniment so the text remains clear and expressive throughout; the literary content deserves to be heard distinctly.
  • Shape phrases according to the natural breath points in the poetry rather than forcing punctuation to align with musical phrases.
  • Listen for moments where the accompaniment might suggest dynamic or emotional shifts; Donnelly's piano writing often guides interpretation beyond what appears in the vocal line.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener or closer where its literary foundation can anchor a thematic set, or use it as a contest selection that demonstrates your choir's ability to balance accessibility with musical substance. The two-part voicing makes it an effective choice for festivals with mixed-age or mixed-experience choirs.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining legit phrasing over longer melodic lines
  • Balancing attention between text intelligibility and musical expression
  • Responding to accompaniment as an interpretive guide rather than mere support
