More about this title

About the Composer: Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows brings together composition, conducting, and classroom experience in work that speaks directly to ensemble needs. His music appears regularly on state and festival reading lists, and he fields commissions consistently from children's choirs, adult ensembles, and intergenerational festival groups across the country.

Burrows studied music education at Southern Methodist University and earned his graduate degree in conducting from Texas Christian University. He serves as Director of Children's Ministries at FUMC in Fort Worth, where he lives with his wife Nina and their daughters Emma and Grace.

Why we love this

Burrows writes for SATB with real clarity and sincerity about themes that matter, and this piece carries weight without demanding heroic vocal writing. The recorded accompaniment frees you to shape the singing carefully, and the text on peace and brotherhood hits differently in concert or festival settings where audiences are ready to listen.

What to expect

This is music that sits in the emotional middle ground between concert hall earnestness and genuine hope. The harmonic language is accessible without feeling generic, and the piece builds without overwhelming singers or audiences.

Who it's for

Any SATB choir working toward a peace or brotherhood themed concert or festival performance. Directors appreciate Burrows' clarity and emotional directness; singers respond to music that treats the text as the center of the work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the SATB lines so the text comes through clearly; recorded accompaniments can make chords feel thick if you're not intentional about voicing transparency.
  • Shape the piece dynamically around the text meaning rather than simply following the score; let the message guide your tempo and expression choices.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in rehearsal to keep the ensemble locked rhythmically while you attend to intonation and blend in your parts.
  • Consider what emotions you want 'love' and 'peace' to evoke in this ensemble; that intention will carry into how singers attack and release notes.

How to use it

Pair this with other repertoire about social justice, unity, or faith; its moderate difficulty makes it strong filler between more technically demanding pieces. As a closer for a concert or festival set, it leaves audiences with something both memorable and meaningful.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing text-driven SATB music with clear harmonic function
  • Balancing four independent lines while maintaining phrase shape
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment without losing ensemble independence
  • Expressing emotional content through dynamic shaping and articulation choices
