More about this title

About the Composer: Loreta Fin

Loreta Fin

Loreta Fin studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and built a career as both performer and educator in Australia. She served as Principal Viola with the Queensland Pops Orchestra for over 25 years while maintaining an active chamber music practice, and has performed alongside internationally recognized artists across orchestral and concert settings.

As Director of Strings at Somerville House School since 1993, Fin has shaped generations of young string players. Her credentials include presentations at Australian and American national music conferences, adjudication at major competitions across Australia, examination work with the Australian Music Examinations Board, and service as State Advisor for Strings. She has composed over 100 works for string orchestra published by Alfred Music worldwide. Recognition for her contributions includes a Queensland State Award for services to the Australian Strings Association (where she served as both State and National President), the National Award for Services to Music and String Teaching in Australia, and ARIA nomination for Best Teacher.

Why we love this

Fin knows exactly what happens in a Wednesday morning rehearsal with junior and training strings because she leads them. This piece respects where young players are while giving them real musical challenges: string crossings that build technique without overwhelming, block rhythms that lock ensemble together, and harmonies that reward careful listening. The flexibility to adjust tempo means you can use it early in the year at a gentler pace and revisit it later when the group is ready to push.

What to expect

Wednesday Workout balances straightforward musicality with genuine technique. String crossings give the piece momentum and texture without feeling mechanical, while block rhythms create satisfying moments of ensemble unity. Harmonic writing is clear and purposeful, letting young players hear how their voice contributes to the whole.

Who it's for

This conductor score serves directors of junior and training string orchestras, developing ensembles, or any young string group working on their first year of more structured repertoire. It works equally well for school string programs, community youth orchestras, or private studio directors combining several young students into a small ensemble.

How to get the most out of it

  • Prepare string crossings slowly at first, focusing on smooth bow transitions rather than speed. Once players find the physical ease, tempo can increase naturally.
  • Work block rhythms with the full ensemble stopping together rather than individually. Have everyone mark the pulse while tapping bows on stands to build unison.
  • Balance the harmonic content by listening for what each section carries in the progression. Junior players often play too loudly in inner voices; gentle reminders to shape around the melody help.
  • Experiment with the suggested tempo range during early rehearsals. You'll find the sweet spot where the group moves confidently without rushing.

How to use it

This piece fits naturally into a winter or spring concert after players have settled into the ensemble. Use it as a bridge piece between soloists or larger works, or pair it with one or two other grade 1.5 pieces to show growth within a rehearsal cycle. Its flexibility makes it ideal for competitions or festival performances where you might adjust tempo and articulation on the fly.

Skills your students will build

  • String crossing technique at varied tempos
  • Reading and executing block rhythms in ensemble
  • Listening for harmonic balance across four parts
  • Ensemble unison and rhythmic precision
  • Sustained bow control and tone consistency
