Description
Inspired by a well-known adage, this rhythmic a cappella original includes compelling body percussion throughout. Before the upper part adds their essential line, lower voices lay down a solid groove, and additional singers stack a second layer. About the Composer: Greg Gilpin

An ASCAP award-winning musician, he serves as Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press and maintains an active presence in both performance and composition.

Beyond the choral world, Gilpin has diversified his career as a recording industry producer and musician, and in 2021 earned recognition for his film score for the short film "Rosie's Rescue." He holds membership in ACDA, NAfME, SAG-AFTRA, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Why we love this

Gilpin understands what singers crave: music that grooves from the opening moment and builds with infectious energy. The layered body percussion and staggered vocal entries create a performance that feels collaborative and playful, turning rehearsal into something singers will actually look forward to.

What to expect

Playful and propulsive, with a modern sensibility grounded in accessible rhythms and clever voice interaction. The steady groove invites singers to feel the pulse in their bodies, while the accumulated layers create momentum and satisfaction as the piece unfolds.

Who it's for

Choirs of intermediate to advanced capability working at the secondary or collegiate level will find the rhythmic complexity and stacked layering rewarding. This piece demands ensemble precision and a willingness to embrace physical engagement, making it ideal for singers ready to move beyond traditional concert fare.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the groove between lower voices first before adding upper parts. Let basses and tenors establish their foundational rhythm so sopranos and altos sit cleanly on top.
  • Treat body percussion as integral instrumentation, not decoration. The cues and strikes need precision and confidence to land the comedic timing and drive.
  • Layer voices intentionally during rehearsal. Start with one part per section, then add the second layer once entrances and rhythms are secure.
  • Balance the final stacked sections carefully. Upper voices should cut through without drowning lower voices who carry the essential groove.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener or closer where its contemporary energy and upbeat delivery shift the tone of your set. It works equally well in festival or competition contexts, where the novelty of body percussion and compact 12-page format make a memorable impression.

Skills your students will build

  • maintaining steady rhythm while performing body percussion
  • singing layered textures in staggered entry patterns
  • balancing SSATB voices within a cappella scoring
