About the Composer: David O'Fallon

David O'Fallon

David O'Fallon began composing and arranging while still in elementary school, and that early drive never stopped. He earned dual degrees in Elementary Education and Music Theory and Composition from Northern Illinois University, where he served as staff arranger for the NIU Jazz Ensemble, one of the country's most respected collegiate jazz programs.

O'Fallon's professional life spans both the concert hall and the orchestra pit. He has performed with the Chicago Civic Orchestra as both percussionist and violist, sung with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, and regularly augments the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's percussion section, appearing on approximately 20 recordings and numerous tours. The American String Teachers Association has commissioned him four times to create contemporary works specifically designed for young players, a responsibility he takes seriously.

Why we love this

O'Fallon writes with genuine understanding of what young cellists can accomplish when given the right vehicle. The rondo form keeps energy high while the fast passagework sits within the technical grasp of Grade 4 players, making this feel genuinely celebratory rather than show-offy. Your cello section will feel like they're performing a real feature, not just marking time.

What to expect

Bright, propulsive, and celebratory. The fast-paced rondo energy keeps things moving while the cello writing gives the section room to display both their technical facility and their ability to blend and phrase together as a unit.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 4 level looking to feature their cello section meaningfully. This works well for orchestras with solid but not advanced cellists who need a confidence builder and a showpiece for a spring or winter concert.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the opening cello line singing above the accompaniment; this isn't a race, but rather a chance for the section to project with confidence and tone quality.
  • Lock the rhythmic foundation between cellos and basses on recurring patterns so the dialogue between them sounds conversational rather than mechanical.
  • Shape phrases in the faster passages by grouping notes in natural patterns rather than mechanically hitting each sixteenth note with equal weight.

How to use it

Program this as a mid-concert feature to highlight your cello section and shift the energy. It pairs well on a concert that includes slower, more serious works, offering audiences a chance to see a different side of the orchestra's capabilities.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing fast passagework with clarity and control at Grade 4 level
  • Blending and balancing as a featured section
  • Phrasing and shaping in rondo form with structural awareness
  • Rhythmic precision and coordination with the bass section
  • Confidence projecting as soloists while maintaining ensemble responsibility
