About the Composer: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin brings decades of conducting and composing experience to every piece he writes. His work has been performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Sydney Opera House, and Royal Festival Hall, earning him recognition as an ASCAP award-winning composer and arranger. As Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press, he understands the needs of student singers and directors intimately.
Beyond the music world, Gilpin's creative energy extends to film scoring (he won Best Score for the short film "Rosie's Rescue" in 2021) and professional organizing, where he has appeared on network television and the popular series "Hoarders." He remains active in ACDA, NAfME, and serves as a Life Loyal Member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Why we love this
This piece captures a genuine emotional arc that feels earned rather than manipulative. The journey from intimate solo to powerful full-choir moment gives your singers real dramatic material to work with, and the modulation into a contemporary pop sound keeps the ending fresh rather than settling into predictable sentiment. Directors consistently choose this for ceremonies because audiences remember it.
What to expect
The piece opens with quiet introspection and personal reflection before building into a moment of collective strength and affirmation. The contemporary pop sensibility in the final chorus brings warmth and optimism, creating the musical equivalent of looking back on shared experience and forward to what comes next.
Who it's for
This octavo works beautifully for high school and middle school choirs seeking a signature graduation or moving-up ceremony piece that feels current without sacrificing emotional substance. It's equally suited to community, college, and adult choirs that want meaningful content with accessibility for mixed-voice ensembles.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the opening solo with space and vulnerability; this moment sets the emotional foundation for everything that follows, so prioritize breath and phrasing over perfection.
- Balance the sentimental verses by maintaining forward momentum in the harmonic progression; let the modulation into the final chorus feel like a natural swell rather than an abrupt shift.
- Use the recorded accompaniment to lock the rhythmic precision in the contemporary pop sections, which benefit from a defined groove underneath the choir.
- Keep the texture transparent during earlier passages so the text resonates clearly; the power of this piece lives in the words as much as the music.
How to use it
Position this as your concert finale when you want to send audiences home with emotion and hope intact. It's particularly effective at graduation ceremonies where the text resonates with the occasion, but it also works as the closing statement in spring concerts or year-end performances where you want to celebrate what your choir has accomplished together.
Skills your students will build
- Singing exposed solos with poise and emotional commitment
- Balancing transparent voicing in SAB texture while maintaining harmonic blend
- Navigating modulation and key changes with secure intonation
- Interpreting contemporary pop idioms (groove, rhythmic precision, contemporary phrasing) in a choral setting
