About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore studied organ performance at Kent State University and earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from the same institution. He has served as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and has established himself as a prolific composer and arranger across multiple genres and formats.

With over 500 published works distributed through Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, Heritage Music Press, and other major publishers, Moore has created sacred and secular choral music, educational pieces, and instrumental works that appear regularly at state festivals and competitions. His contributions to American choral music earned him recognition from the American Choral Directors Association, and he has received the ASCAP Composers Standard Award seventeen times.

Why we love this

Moore knows what school choirs need in December: music that sounds festive without demanding weeks of rehearsal time. This medley works because it bundles three songs into one efficient package, letting you program something special without sacrificing preparation time for winter concerts.

What to expect

Festive and approachable, this medley captures the warmth of traditional English carols without the heaviness of extended arrangements. The writing sparkles with holiday joy while remaining grounded enough that singers feel confident and present.

Who it's for

Directors managing holiday concert calendars with limited rehearsal time benefit most from this arrangement. It works well for singers with some choral experience who can handle part independence without extensive training.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the contrasting character of each carol in the medley; slight tempo adjustments between songs help each one breathe and prevents the set from feeling monotonous.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment as an rehearsal tool early on so singers can lock onto the harmonic framework independently before sectional rehearsals.
  • Pay attention to the blend in the second part line; 2-part writing exposes unbalanced voicing, so balance your lower voices carefully during runs and held notes.

How to use it

Position this as a standalone holiday moment in your concert, or pair it with another secular Christmas piece to create a short, punchy seasonal segment. At eight pages, it fits neatly into programs where you want seasonal flavor without dominating the second half.

Skills your students will build

  • Part independence in 2-part texture
  • Quick preparation and learning efficiency
  • Holiday repertoire performance and diction in English carols
