About the Arranger: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin stands among the most performed choral arrangers in American music education, having led major ensembles at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Sydney Opera House. As Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press and an ASCAP award-winning composer, he brings decades of experience in both the concert hall and the classroom to every project he undertakes.
Beyond his work in music, Gilpin has expanded his creative pursuits into professional organizing and producing, appearing on network television and the series "Hoarders." He remains deeply connected to music education through active membership in ACDA, NAfME, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and continues to compose, conduct, and teach as the music world expands.
Why we love this
Gilpin and Schmutte capture the theatrical grandeur of MGM's golden age without requiring a full pit orchestra. The arrangement balances crowd-pleasing nostalgia with genuine choral craft, giving singers meaty parts to sink their teeth into while keeping the staging possibilities flexible enough for concert halls of any size.
What to expect
A tour through Hollywood's most beloved moments, wrapped in lush harmonies and theatrical flair. The music swells with nostalgia and glamour, evoking the golden age of cinema while remaining fully alive in a choral setting.
Who it's for
High school and show choirs seeking repertoire that entertains without sacrificing musicality. Singers thrive on the narrative energy of film music, and this arrangement gives them a complete dramatic arc within a single piece.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the transitions between songs deliberately; each new section deserves a fresh dramatic entrance rather than simply continuing from the previous tune.
- The recorded accompaniment allows you to rehearse independently, but consider learning the orchestral score early in the process so you can discuss phrasing and balance choices with an ensemble.
- Layer your staging choices with the music's emotional arcs; MGM songs often build in intensity, and staging that mirrors this progression will amplify your singers' connection to the material.
- Balance the comedic and sentimental moments within the medley; not every section needs the same emotional weight, and variety will keep your audience invested.
How to use it
Position this as a concert closer or a cornerstone moment for an MGM or cinema-themed concert. Its length and dramatic scope make it substantial enough to anchor a program, and the built-in audience recognition creates an immediate connection that can energize an entire evening.
Skills your students will build

- Dramatic interpretation of familiar melodic material
- Ensemble balance in thickly scored SATB writing
